Does it just creep a little bit or does it actually move you forward? If it's not moving you forward, that tends to happen to old boat and I wouldn't worry about it.
Detach the shift cable from the transmission and shift it manually, but be sure to either be in wide open water or on the trailer (idle speed only). On-water is preferable, so you can get an idea of how much thrust it has when this happens. If it doesn't happen when you shift it manually, the shift cable may need adjustment. If it does and yo uhave no other problems, I wouldn't worry about it. I have seen it on many boats.

It does just creep along. It never used to this. We have a tough time holding it in the shore station when warming up
Creeps along with the cable attached, or not?
When was the transmission oil changed? Any overheats?

Had a velvet drive that did the same thing. A clutch plate was worn out allowing the shaft to rotate while in neutral. Spent about $85 on parts, $40 for a manual, and all weekend to repair. Back in business.

Need to replace the clutch pack. Mine would stop if I ran the RPMs up to 3000. Mine did it for a couple of years before I had the tranny rebuilt. Just make sure boat is off before entering the water.

Curious as to what the trans fluid looks like. I've seen low or bad fluid cause crazy problems like that.
