Guard your nads and take a pic.

Just by the pics...Boat Speed 11 ish?

1. Your right foot is too far back.
2. Your weight is squarely on the back foot.
3. No toe side pressure in the 2nd pic.

Fix those things and you will get it. Sorry, not the board or the wake.

Tip: Try turning your right foot inward (pigeon) and bend your back knee toward the front. This will help you find center. Once you find center, the light will go on. Remember that the business end of surfing starts with the lower half of the body. Get your center and all is good.

Good Luck!

We love it there. Unfortunately life/kids/work have not allowed us to move that direction. We go and make it a family vacation(about a week) every year. We were there from the 11th-18th of Aug. Monday-Friday we had the lake to ourselves. Really was not that bad the last weekend. Could have been close to school or "tax free weekend"????? I think it helps that there is no gas north of Briarcliff....unless you know of a place up that direction.

We had a GREEEEAAAT time as usual.

That's just real frustrating. My starboard side does not look that good and I have stock, FlyHigh, and 1/2KGB, plus 2-3 people with the driver. Looks like your surfer is pretty far back. We lose it if we get anywhere near that far. Our "pocket" is so small that it is more fun to just surf with the rope, otherwise you are just jacking the board up and down.:(

endl
08-26-2008, 04:29 PM
turbosdad,
Starboard will never be as good as Port due to prop rotation. Try more weight in you KGB and put at least some of those adults on your Port side up front. That extra front weight will lengthen your wake.

Nice wake. 10 people always helps. I also was wondering why anyone would ride heelside starboard. Seems double tough. I tried to ride heelside port (I'm goofy) just so I could get on the good side of the wake. Not much luck yet. Still better toeside starboard for me. We fill all the stock tanks, and just move the bodies around. I want to add some ballast though. Seems like it takes a lot to load down the X-15.

the only reason we did starboard side is because we didnt know what we were doing. our older boat had a gas vent on the port side and we didnt want to get it wet. when we starting doing this we where using an old school surfboard.
we just got the x7 this summer and the board and the fat sacs a few weeks ago so this is all pretty new. we are just having fun right now. cant wait to try the port side - hope its better.

The really good riders can ride all four stances.

all 4 stances??

please explain

i ride "goofy" right foot forward. we really do not stay on one side though we usually are too busy doing 180's then riding tail forward on the opposite side or doing 360's. you guys really should be able to ride without the rope. i have had numerous people do it behind my 209(not the best for wake) with 800 lbs of ballast.

i can not praise the cwb ride enough!! great all around board!!

anyone ride the obrien alias TT? i am looking to ride one or get some input on one. since it is the same on both ends it would fit what we do very well i think!!

cool. i can do both!! does that make me cool??

my switch is doing a 180 and then riding board nose back!! that may be my goal for the weekend. work on riding left foot forward!!

being that i ride goofy i feel more comfortable on the starboard side with my face to the wave.

I'm not the Yoda or the Fonz. As a matter of fact I only ride regular on the port side. Sorry if I offended you but I've seen riders do 1080s, backside switch 540's, 360 shuvs, front 360 shuvs, coffins, big spins, air 360s, huge air, cutback lipsides and other difficult tricks without a rope. When you've seen these things done without a rope, it gives you a great appreciation for what riders can do with just a board and a wake. I guess "cool" depends on one's own perspective. On September 6th-7th the World Wakesurf Championships will be be held in Nashville. If you can attend, you'll see riders perform all of the above mentioned tricks. It's a great opportunity to see some very cool tricks.

This is a Centurion Boat sponsored event so you probably won't see it promoted on a Mastercraft site or dealership. Most of the promoting comes on the events or wakesurfing forums on www.wakeworld.com. If you have a chance to go it would be a great opportunity to see the best in the world. I believe all of the Open divisions ride in the afternoon. The event was intentional planned for a football Sunday to increase the exposure of the sport. It's my understanding that the water flow from the dam will be restricted to cut down on the flow of the river. Should be a great time.

I removed the hard tanks and replaced them with 750 fat sacs. I have a 390 fat sac underneath the port side seat (I plumbed the starboard pump to this sac). I fill the 750 in the port locker. Fill the 390 with as much water that will go in it. Fill the center ballast and place around 150 lbs in the bow. Surf around 11 mph. This works very well for a port wake with just my wife and daughter in the boat. I can not get as good of a wake on the starboard side.

WOW, that is a really long wake.... Any tips on how to get that???? How far back are you from the platform?

kgrove
09-02-2008, 01:15 AM
The photo was a camera phone - he was in the rear starboard corner seat. As for how I got the wake long, I took advice from this forum. I need to do more experimenting to see how much effect it has on my boat, but the consensus seems to be that the higher proportion of weight you put in the rear, the taller/steeper the wave gets, but the wave crashes sooner to give you less length to surf. The more weight you start shifting to the front, the less height you get on the wave, but the more you lengthen the surfable area. The day of this photo was my first experimenting with that much extra ballast. It takes too much time to fill/empty/refill bags to really test out the best weighting. Someday when I have a bunch of fatties on board with me I'll run some experiments and keep moving people from front to back and back to front to find the "just right" mix of weight.

The "just right" mix of weight probably would vary from person to person based on their surfing style. My suspicion is those with more a "longboard" style (don't know if that term is really used in wakesurfing) with gradual gliding turns and more cruising would probably be happier with the wave as long as possible. More aggressive short-board or skateboard style surfers probably want the steepest wave possible and will sacrifice length.

That's actually the little guys rope (shorter) and we put a loop in it to shorten it for surfing and we didn't have it in that loop in the pic, it usually is, he must have rode before me. Years ago my son got his finger looped in the rope while wakeboarding and ripped the skin along with his finger nail off  So yeah! we're careful and don't use it like this normaly.

No, I don't have meniscal damage, it doesn't lock up and I can do everything I want except competitive basketball. I'll have surgery when I can't do things I want to. The hardest part is it happened on a slalom 3 years ago and even with regular workouts the muscles are still only 90% as strong, takes a long time to get it back when you get past 40.

I was getting up behind our previous boat on a 65 inch Obrien, my wife gave it full throttle, my left knee was out and the pressure ended up with Grade IV strain of the lateral collateral ligament and same for ACL. Moral to that story is don't buy a seadoo sportboat that can pull you up fast enough to tear you leg up or train your wife more on driving before you let her pull you. I've been up on a slalom since but not it is free riding on a connely Mid-SX instead of the elbow to elbow cutting i used to do.

Thanks......We have the Fly High Ballast System installed plus extra 400# under passenger seat and another 400# in seat. With no-one else on the boat I will add another 400# on the swim platform.

For "regular" side wake I have the best results when I fill Stock Port and Center Ballast, Port FlyHigh (750 in the port locker) and both FlyHigh 350's in the bow. As I said above, then I fill the 400 under the passenger seat, 400 in the seat, and 400 on swim platform.

We surf between 12.5 and 13.5. I have also found that I maintain a better wave running the Perfect Pass in RPM Mode.

Right now he has ridden the stock rear and center ballast. I have a 750 sack for the rear locker and 400 for the passenger locker. We will be filling them up this week.

Let me know how that works for you. I really had to experiment a lot to get my X-Star dialed in just right for a good surf wake. I also found that I change the speed quite a bit for different riders. My daughter is 11 and she rides better slower with a larger wave. When my son rides I speed up, which makes the wave longer and gives him more of a face on the wave to work with for tricks.

I notice in those pics you guys are 5-7 feet back of the swim platform. When I wakesurf the only way I can throw the handle is to have the tip of the board really close to the platform any farther back and I lose the push.

Any suggestions....

Cary K.

Weight in the bow will make the wave longer and cleaner. Weight in the rear helps the height. While I don't like small wakes, I prefer them be longer and cleaner than I do tall, all 3 is where its at though.

My surf wake is usually even longer than shown, but I just grabbed a quick crew and headed out to try the new board. It is still longer than it looks like in the pic, the spray from the board is distorting it some.

In the pic above, I have a 600lb sac almost full on one side of bow, center sac full, driver, two passengers in boat, 75lb lead plate under them, rear side ballast full and 300lbs of lead in that locker, and the rope handler on the back.

PWTXstar

I agree with Cary. Weight in the bow will make the wave longer and cleaner. We run 700#'s in the bow. Here is a link to a clip that shows our wave height and length. IMO the length of the wave is just as important as the height. If you are going to do any type of trick you will need the longer face of the wave to perform the trick.

I showed the pics to my daughter, seeing if I could get any peer pressure to start riding.....she's not buying it yet.

Not sure how old your "little snots" are, but one thing that I have found is that if they invite a friend to come along they are much braver and willing to try new things. It especially helps if the friend they invite along is adventurous or better yet has some water sports experience.

I'm with ya dude! booooooring :D you can't compair wakesurfing to real surfing, and if someone tells you it's the same, they're probably from the mid US and never seen the ocean :D way to slow and not enough energy to even compair. My boat isn't the best for this but I've been behind an x-45 loaded and just couldn't get into it.

I got my kids trying it by taking them on the tube with me and having them roll off of it several times starting at slower speeds and workin up. My oldest would not even think about boarding until I did this and now my lil girl is ready to try it and wants to wakeboard with me this weekend.

I dunno. The higher I get up the ladder approaching 40 the harder it is eating water at 23mph. As a beginner, I sorta prefer the nice cush splash your body makes surfing rather than the jagged hole you punch as you catch an edge going wake 2 wake.

Guess I just gotta get better on the wakeboard.

mtajpa - we've got close to the same boat. Any ballast, or is that just a full 60 gallons of fuel? I was really liking the wake my '00 230VRS was kicking this weekend at 10-12mph with just a full fuel tank. Figure it's gonna be fairly sick once I throw 450s next to the engine and a 400 in the ski locker.

Any surfing purist would say what you are saying, but for most wakesurfers, the appeal is having an endless wave and not having to paddle your a$$ off between sets. Realistically, the amount you can wakesurf in 10 minutes would probably equate to a half day of real surfing. The boring part is for the observers IMO. Sitting there watching someone wakesurf (unless they are incredible or a chick) gets old compared to watching a good wakeboarder.

Maybe it's becaue the biggest wake wave behind a boat is the smallest surf wave I have ever been on in hawaii. :D :D But yes, you are correct, if there are chicks, then it makes a different world....

No ballast 5 people in boat 3/4 full of fuel, speed at 8.5 to 9 mph is just enough for me to get some slack. My kid can ride for ever on this little wake with no rope. Son wants me to put in some ballast but I need the storage more than the weight. At least that's my opinion.

Ive been sking since I was 6 and wake boarding on and off for last 5 or 6 years. Wake surfing is just relaxing compared to sking. However the first thing in the water is my old Kidder.

Saw Keenan perform this weekend at the Texas Wakesurf Championship. Although he is only 13 he won the Men's Pro Skim division. Keenan will also be at the National Wakesurf Championships in Dayton the first weekend in August. The event is offering a big cash purse so the best riders in the country and maybe some European riders will be there.

Are you confused about what learning is or just having a good time?

What boards are you guys riding? I just picked up my first board. It's an Alias TT from O'Brien. Got a sweet deal on it and just couldn't pass it up. I hope I don't outgrow it this season. The Inland Surfers are a little out of the price range for this season.

Currently riding 2010 Thresher, Ja Mako, LE and Hazen...also got a Ronix Koal 4.6 and a Piranha.

Ordering a Custom Hazen soon as the others i have are a bit big for me.

Highly recomend the Shredstixx, their shapes are off tap.

QUESTION...

My friend just got a SAN and we were trying to dial in a good surf wake on the port side but it just dawned on me that his boat's prop rotates opposite from a MC. Would this have a material impact on the wave on Port? Is it accurate to say a MC has a better portside wave and a SAN has better starboard? Thanks in advance for clarification on this issue.

sand2snow22
05-27-2011, 10:02 AM
Yes, What year SAN? I think they switched to MC rotation recently, so NO for current boats.....

Here I am surfing behind the X-9. Since we don't like to use a lot of ballast, we use an actual surfboard (pain to transport in the boat) and it works great.
