View Full Version : RV Rentals
Betsy's thread about camping spots reminds me that we'd like to rent-not-own a motor home for a week or a long weekend this summer with the kids.
Anyone have any experiences with these and/or suggestions?
I'd like to tow the boat and have everyone together in the rv but a few I've found in my light search around home won't let you tow?

We used to rent a motor home every year also. Last year my parents in law bought a 29' Minnie Winnie. (Basically it means i got me a motor home for free, lol). Its hard to beat the convenience of having all your stuff in that enclosed mobile camper.
My experience has always been that they don't let you tow for insurance reasons. Maybe there is an extra insurance rider you can get?

In my experience I have found that you would be better off towing with your normal tow vehicle. Two reasons for this:
1) You are familiar with your tow vehicle
2) You will run out of beer and it is not fun to try and turn a camper around in the liquor store parking lot.

Reason #3 is it really isn't fun or easy to try and launch with an RV either. Back in his day, my dad was one of the best drivers I have ever seen, and he used to cuss a blue streak launching with an RV.

We had to put a hitch on the front of our 30' motorhome just for launching the boat.
I kind of doubt the rental place will like that much.
Gettin alot of negative reviews here. I have convinced myself I could back well enough to launch &load once since the boat will stay in the water all weekend but have been blocking out the fact that I KNOW we'll forget something and have to drive the house to the store if we do :o

I don't think it is negative reviews as much as having to drive the 43 foot class a motorhome into town to get whatever or launch boat with said motorhome.

sounds like I should invest in a double hitch 5th wheel or something for the couple of times we want to go camp

RV with a Scooter to go in town!
Of course, the Scooter may not help alot on the ramp...I saw peoples lauch their boat with a 28 foot RV.Very makable is the ramp is a good one.
one of the two places we wanted to do is an easy ramp I know I can do with the camper but the other will be a mutha
Ok, I am doing the rental thing
I feel like John Candy already!
I'll give a full report whether you want it or not afterward
Did the RV Rental thing and have to say that it worked out well for our needs.
The thing was much easier during trailer backing than I anticipated and I'd have my little helpers lookout the back at the turnaround to be sure I wasn't jacknifing the trailer.
The only issue was that IF you forget anything, you need a buddy with a vehicle at the site or a full service marina or you'll be driving your campground to the store!

Ric,
I guess that means your rental company allowed towing (or at least the RV had a hitch)? Who did you rent from? Was it a national company?

I saw a camper (travel trailer) this weekend that was a rental..... had it EMBLAZONED on the rear of the rig... that wouldn't be sooooo bad....
but what I thought was terrible was that this particular rig DID NOT have an awning:eek:....................................... ......I cannot do without my awning! What if a site you reserve is not shaded:confused:...since most reservations are "sight unseen"
it was from some rental place in Texas
I dont know if I was supposed to tow or not, but I did it and it worked fine.

Hey I'm glad it worked out. I know we definitely enjoy having our motor home (well my parent's in laws) when we are camping. And I agree it helps to have another vehicle around to head into town. Of course now the wife won't go camping without the motorhome, .... you may have created a monster there. ;)
