Hopefully this isn't anyone on this board...
Was out crusing with my wife today in the boat and ran across this scene on Lake Lanier. Not sure what happened, but it looked ugly. The green MC ran totally ashore and there were 2 other Mastercrafts that looked like friends, or they were trying to assist. I think one of the MC's had a rope to try and pull it off the ground. The shore had stumps all over and there was one sticking out from under the boat. Felt really bad for the people, but it was hard to see how this could happen. There is plenty of water in this area.
Looked like everyone that was there was ok. We pulled up to see if they needed a phone, but they waved us off. There was a lot of boat traffic checking out the scene, so I'm sure they were not trying to have any additional people floating up.
By the time we came back around, DNR was rollilng up, so pulling it off with a rope didn't work.
Didn't have a camera, so the pics are from the phone and not high quality.
Be safe out there!

Yeah, wonder if it happened at night. If there is no moon it's pretty hard to tell where water ends and land begins.
Is this the same lake?

Apparently underwater gear on a inboard doesn't like being drug backwards through rocks and dirt and was acting like a anchor!

Yes - that's the same lake with the alligator. Someone released it and it was still alive. Thankfully the lake does not naturally have alligators living in it. Regarding the misprint - GA is 49th (or 50th) in terms of education and national testing. Explains both the article and why this boat is up on shore ;)
If it happened the night before, they probably showed up the next day somewhat sober. I would be interested to know how they ended up getting if off the land. Hopefully they pulled it forward into the water on the other side. Seems better then jamming the prop, rudder, and all back up into the boat....

No offense meant here..The land is the hard stuff and the water is softer. If you have trouble telling the difference you shouldn't be driving as fast as this guy was.

I just bought a house right around the corner from there. It was pitch black that night and my GPS was dead. Thought I could make it. WRONG!!
Beleieve it or not I drove it home last night. no MPH's lost and absolutely no vibration or temp issues on the shaft. Still taking it in to have it looked at.
We went right between 2 stumps some how. We dug out all the sand and mud under the prop, so when we took it off nothing was stressed. Some how there is no hull damage. I scraped down one rock.
I am attaching a pick of my driving it off and the ultra sad beached pic in decent quality.

Actually you should no what you are talking about before speaking. I have had a boat all my life and guarantee I am a safe driver smart a$$. I would welcome a national test. Like I said I just bought a house here in Gainesville. If you want to check visibility that night please do so. It was so bad boat US didnt want to come out if I could find a ride. I callled for a tow as soon as it happened. As far as DNR not getting there. No one was hurt and I did not need DNR. They came by a few times that day to see how we were progressing.
By the way, we had 3 - $50-60K boat out there. We had cell phones........ I love how 900 people stopped by only 3 offered to help. Now you are making assumptions about people and what happened.
I hope I cleared it up for you.

No one was injured....Some how it was a rather soft landing. I got off the gas when I thought I saw a stump. It took us 4 hours to get it off with no damage. We dug under it and pulled the prop off on land. Dug a huge hole underneath to pivot on when turning it towards water. It broke a 15,000 lb rope that boat us getting if off though.

You cleared it up. Wow, the testing thing was a joke. I appologize if/that it was in bad taste.
As I was pulling up to offer help, you waved us off. I wanted to stop again on our way back through, but my wife figured you were upset enough without having us roll up again. We are newer to boat ownership, so not sure how much help we would have been - we were figuring phone, rides out, or bringing out some sort of supplies if needed.
As I've seen on these boards, the CSX is definitely not for everyone and you are not alone in your thoughts on it. Thankfully we have no intentions of selling for a long time and have been thoroughly enjoying it.
Glad to hear no one was injured.

I think the only sensible solution here is Thunderdome! But that is my answer to everything.
Lake Lanier scares me in broad daylight. A man made lake 15 feet down = a lot of sudden and violent obstacles. There are bleachers from an old racetrack sticking out of the water if that tells you anything.
Glad all seems to be OK.

Obviously I got sensitive about my situation. No offense taken really. I am defensive by nature (the irish in me). I have had a boat on Lanier for the last 7 years, and I have officially revoked my night driving privaledges. I am thankful as he!! my 7 year old wasnt on board. That would have really messed her up emotionally. DNR said yesterday that the depth the lake has fallen to now is when alot of the accidents start (day and night), because all the islands that are now creeping up. All though I hit a peninsula!!!!! not an island. I was very fortunate. I googled all morning yesterday for removing a beached boat. I saw on you tube where a guy with a brand new X-1 had to helicopter his out in Michigan. I was scared to death I was gonna have to pay 3K for that.

The helicopter X1 was in Spokane WA and was done by a current member of the forum. He walked everyone through it when it happened as it happened including coming on here looking for suggestions on how to get it off without going to the last resort of using a hleicopter. His scenario was he beached it one weekend and then before they got it un-beached the next weekend they let the water out a lot so his boat went from just a little beached to way up on dry land. I think he said it cost 1k.

The, what were you doing out if you couldn't see bit. I know I've gone to the lake and stayed later then I thought and ended up going back to the dock after sunset. The thing is, I never check the moon rise time and sometimes there isn't any and you do have to go home. On plain at a safe speed is sometimes not safe. You just never know what can happen.

DNR said yesterday that the depth the lake has fallen to now is when alot of the accidents start (day and night), because all the islands that are now creeping up. All though I hit a peninsula!!!!! not an island.
Islands are just now starting to creep up:confused: They have been creeping up for the last 2 years. I have been on Lanier for 27 years and have seen things the last 2 years that I did not know was there. Rock piles 30 feet off shore, Treetops coming out of the water where the lake is 30 to 40 feet deep.

WOW, I just got hold of this thread.
Two things are running through my head right now. First, I'm glad nobody was hurt and the photo of that boat riding away from that accident is a testament to how well MC's are built.
Second.......WOW I'm glad I'm not on that lake!!!!! :eek3::eek3::eek3: My little lake in northeast Ohio (Berlin Reservior) has it's share of underwater horrors, but the water is drained every year and you can SEE where the trouble spots are in October. It's not hard to stay away from these areas when you know where they are. Some of the pictures of the grand stands and trees sticking out of 20 feet of water sounds like a SERIOUS safety concern. I'm putting these pictures in my head and will remember them if I ever end up on that lake.

Thats why I kept my mouth shut this whole thread:D Better seek to understand. Thought the unfortunate owner may be on here. Glad nobody was injured, the X-30 included!! I used to work for Liquid in Orlando, those are awesome boats. In defense of the others, you know us MC Owners- Passionate about our boats, and sometimes jump the gun if they even sense any signs of MC abuse. Again, your very lucky, hopefully the repairs are minimal:cool:

If nothing else, I got some huge laughs off some of the responses.
I will attempt to answer a few of your questions:
I live one cove over from Harbour Point about 1/2 mile from said accident
I do not have tower lights, I would have been blazing them that night if I did.
I did not attempt to go home blind that night, I left Holiday Marina (on the other side of the lake) with my GPS in hand. I have a trail popcorned on it for navigation. About 3/4 the way home it died. First the lights went out on it, then it lost satelites and poof it was gone. Unfortunately not a whole lot else I could do.
As far as the islands popping up for the last 2 years. Yes that is true. But like DNR said, we have all got use to where the low spots were. Now it is dipping to unknown territory. Read the lake levels and see where we were this time last year.
I was going just fast enough to keep the boat on plane.
There is no justifying my situation, I made a huge mistake. I would much rather my pride be hurt then the boat or me.

Lanier is still over 100' in the channel and in the main part of the lake. some of those pics are way back in coves or they are several miles upstream from the dam. Lanier is one of the best Corps lakes in Georgia. Consuming alcohol can have short-term negative affects on vision. For a low blood alcohol level, visual performance is less affected by the visual changes than by alteration in brain functions [1]. Brain functions can be impaired by alcohol within minutes of consumption since alcohol is absorbed in the blood and the brain is supplied with more blood than other organs.
When the legal blood-alcohol level is reached and surpassed, depth perception and night vision are affected. It becomes impossible to accurately judge how far away objects are when depth perception deteriorates. Vision becomes blurred or you may see double since eye muscles lose their precision causing them to be unable to focus on the same object.
Alcohol affects night vision by keeping the pupils from adapting from darkness to light. The oncoming headlights of a car will cause a drunk driver to be dazzled much more severely than a sober driver. Alcohol consumption also produces tunnel vision and can make night blindness worse [2].

Alcohol does affect a person's vision in a number of ways. I have read that it can lead to decreased night vision, decreased peripheral vision, reduced depth perception, poor focus, and difficulty in distinguishing colors (particularly red and green). According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Am J Clin Nutr. 1980 Dec;33(12):2741-9), vitamin A and zinc metabolism are affected by alcohol. Combined vitamin A and zinc deficiencies are common in alcoholics and may result in abnormal dark adaptation. In other words, alcohol impairs night vision by interfering with vitamin A and zinc. The study also mentions that ethanol causes abnormal dark adaptation by acting as a competitive inhibitor with retinol for alcohol dehydrogenase in the eye. I am not sure if this is a separate mechansim, or if it is also related to alcohol's effects on vitamin A and zinc. Maybe someone else could further clarify that?
