I have a 1993 Prostar. 351 engine.
I noticed this weekend when changing my strut bushings that I have a short muffler. ( silencer) It is about 24 " in length.
I am curious what everyone else has,The 24 " ones or the longer 44" muffler?
My exhaust is louder than what I would like for it to be. I would like to know if I change to the longer muffler, will it quiet the engine noise.
Anyone know what kind they are using on the newer boats. I noticed that they are very quiet.
thanks

BriEOD: How quiet is your 88 compared to the newer boats(2000 and up) ?
east tx skier: Did you buy your boat new? I wonder if that is what was from the factory.
When I idle with mine, it rumbles. when I take off it roars. it is not unberable. I am just not into the loud mufflers anymore. A lot of people think it sounds cool.
My friend has a 2002 X-9 and his is so quiet when idleing you can hardly tell it is running when sitting next to him.

The only comparison I can make is to the 04 197's. I felt that the exhaust was much different in terms of loudness. However, the engine and/or engine box was much quieter in the boat than mine. But, I tried to compensate for that somewhat by insulating the inside of my engine box this past off season with Rhino Liner.

I could stand for my boat to be a bit more lacking on the decibels at ski speed, but short of the new noise reduction I added this winter, I'm not messing with it. I did not buy the boat new, but I'd bet my mufflers that they are the originals.

This is interesting... I don't find my boat to be loud on the water at all (at least in the boat) and it's straight pipe into the air once we're up and running. Usually we only have to turn the stereo up 2 notches to keep up with the wind and motor noise. And the most noticeable motor noise comes from the motor box and not the exhaust. So I'm wondering how quiet you can make your motor and at what point the wind noise, etc... takes over...
Either way, I'm not retrofitting mufflers to my big block!

My Big Block 454 has straight pipes as well and it's not really that loud. I'm not sure how it came from the factory but It's really not that bad! I don't think you guys should waste the money!
