View Full Version : Burred my prop

Oops... crowded and windy at the dock today and I let the wind push me into too shallow of water while trying to squeeze into a small opening at the dock (a couple boats hogging the dock while everyone else circled for a chance to dump their driver to get the trailer).

Anyhow, I was lucky that it was sand/mud and not rocks, but the prop did hit ground hard enough to stall the engine (low rpm). After getting the boat out, the prop doesn't appear bent or dinged up too bad, but there are some scratches and burrs on the leading edge and tips. Not horrible looking, but they are definitely there.

Any idea how concerned I should be about this? Vibration? Other problems possible? What do you do for this? I know clean props = good props, but I don't know how dirty the prop can get before it could cause problems.

I sent a dinged prop to the Prop Shop http://www.propshopltd.com/proprepair.html and they did a fantastic job repairing it.

We have a place around here called Precision Propellor. It cost me $150 to bring it back to spec. Well worth it, IMO. If the baldes are burred, they could be slightly tweaked. If the boat runs fine, you could probably wait until the end iof the season

I would imagine there's a shop around you somewhere.

If it is truely not misshaped with no material missing, it would be possible to take a file to it and just clean it up. Take the rough edges off, but remove as little as possible and it will probably be fine. The only danger is taking too much material off and putting it out of balance but if it is just burred, no problem. Once you have done it, check for vibration. If any at all, send it in.
