Our ski lake is being overrun with geese. How do people get rid of them? I heard today that bird bombs work pretty well. Some make a loud screaching noise, others just loud pops. Any other methods that work?

We have them at Gaston, My dad (God Rest) fought to get rid of them and couldn't. He tried shiny tape, putting a fake owl on the peir... all the crap they sell you at the garden shops and nothing. Finally he bought a high powered pellet gun and would shoot them in the rears to make them leave... easier the going down flailing arms... well that helped but they still kept coming.
One day, he accidentally (no really, it was) hit one in the head and killed it. He had to hustledown and dispose of it, because they are protected... but no joke, they didnt come back to his land the rest of that season. So the next year when they started up again I will give you one guess what he did.

Here in South Louisiana, the rice farmers use these to keep birds/geese from eating up their crops. Your neighbors may not like you but you will also have no need to install an alarm in your boat..
Quotes from the site:
"TARGET PESTS: Birds like Canadian Geese, ducks, crows, pigeons, starling, sparrows and sea gulls. Can also be used to target animals like deer and rabbit.
WHERE TO USE IT: Outside only. Great for use around boat docks, gardens, fields, orchards and generally anywhere there are nuisance birds or animals which you don't want around."

I beleive there are certain lights that are placed in the water that will work, i have seen these on golf courses and small public ponds to keep the geese out

The interesting thing about this picture is that I was just floating at least 100 yards off shore and a pair of mallards swam out to the boat and hopped on the platform.

I think we might try the birdbombs, then if that doesn't work, there is early goose season on Sept. 1st!!!

I had the same problem. Got blisters from raking goose crap. Tie a mylar helium filled balloon to something in your yard. The geese think it is a predatory bird and stay away. The mylar balloon are the ones made of tin foil. They will last about a week. After a while the geese will just go to someone elses yard. No kidding this really works!

We had a huge problem at our lake place, until we got a "goose chaser" dog. The geese literally swim past our place now, used to overtake the lawn and you wouldn't even want to walk on the grass. After one season, they stay away now. We see them flying in next door, but they won't come near our place even if the dog isn't there.

For several years I tied a thin string to stakes about 10 feet apart along the waters edge. The string was 6 inches about the ground and made it hard for them to reenter the water quickly so they stayed away. I put it up every spring until this year I was too busy to get to it. To my surprise they still avoid my property. I hate those crappy bastards.
I also use fishing line strung over my hoist to keep the seagulls away. This also works and I hate those crappy bastards as well, but I do appreciate how they clean up all the dead fish etc.. I they ate goose poop I would be all set.

If people would only realize that you should NOT feed the stupid things...
We now have 23 Canada geese on our lake, which is a pretty small lake in the Adirondacks. They make a complete mess everywhere they go. The mallards are just as bad though, they just make up the difference in sheer numbers. Every weekend I look forward to them blasting the swim platform of my boat. It's such great fun to clean it up. Don't know what it is about my boat. Someday...mark my words...someday!!!

Have the same problem. Anyone else tried mylar? How long does it work? Over the course of a season, do they learn that the mylar does not attack? :D
