Got a 2000 x star with the 330 GM engine, which was new last May. Its only done 175hrs
and the cranks gone??? Its been serviced every 50hrs.
What would cause this to happen???? and should it be covered under warranty?

"and the cranks gone???"

What does this mean? It doesn't crank when you turn the key? It doesn't go fast?

If it doesn't crank, does it click? If it doesn't click, it could be the neutral safety switch engaging because the shfit cable needs adjustment or is bad, the wires to this switch may have a problem or the ignition switch/crank wire may have a problem. It could also be that the starter Bendix (the part that engages the flywheel's ring gear, to turn the when trying to crank it) motor doesn't move, because it wasn't lubricated annually, as it should be. If this is bad, it can be replaced but for the samll difference in price, it's probably better to have the whole starter rebuilt.

Under warranty on an 8 year old boat? Not a chance. The number of hours doesn't matter.

Are you saying the crankshaft has gone bad?
Please elaborate on what "my crank is gone" means!

should it be covered under warranty?

not likely. Hopefully it's a dead batt, neutral safety or kill switch. Missing crank is no bueno.

the new engine was fitted last may and its only been used for about 4 months last year with
about 175hrs. it been well serviced and serviced for this summer. this was only the 2nd time on the water and the engine went bang!! and we had to be towed in.
now just done a compression test and all cylinders read 150. if you take all the plugs out and turn it over, the knocking has gone but put 1 plug in or the compression tester and you get a very loud knocking from the bottom of the engine. we had a machanic look at it and he said its not the big ends, but the crank that has gone???

Now we're getting somewhere. Sounds like another engine or a rebuild of that one. Sorry to hear that. What kind of warranty if any did the engine come with and has it expired?

Where did you buy the motor and was it new, or was it rebuilt?

If you heard a bang, was it at high RPM? It's possible that the block is cracked.

the engine wasn't at high reves, it was just on the plane.
we bought the x star from a MC dealer in the UK, and because it had just had a new yes NEW engine fitted was one of the reasons we bought it.

It ran well and suddenly banged? Did you see any dash lights or hear any warning buzzer? If you turn the key to ON, to you see a dash light and hear a buzzer? You should.

Can you show us a photo of the top of the motor?

Did the motor come from MasterCraft or some other supplier? Did they give you a warranty? I know you bought it in England but some engine manufacturers have an international warranty.

If somehow the crankshaft broke, it's highly unlikely. I guess on a "new" engine you might have got one with a flaw in it, but I've never heard of a crank just going without reason.

As far as warranty goes, you have to check with your dealer and find out where the motor came from. Did you get the reciept for the new engine when you bought the boat? Would the dealer have it? Who put it in?

JimN: didn't see ao hear any warning buzzer. when you switch key on they work ok.photo attached i think? the engine was fitted and supplied by mastercraft but they say there's no warranty???

Muttly: Got invoice for boat but it was sold as a brokerage sale with no warranties, even though mastercraft fitted a new engine???

When this happened, were you on a lake or river with floating weeds and leaves?

If you look at the hull fitting where fresh water comes in for engine cooling, follow it to the oil cooler, which is shown in the link: http://www.skidim.com/prodinfo.asp?number=R147014

Remove the hose from the end that is closest to the hull and check for weeds. If it's clogged, it may have overheated more than one time and at fairly high speed, it caused this damage. ALso, look for a valve for stopping water flow- I see a white plastic part in the photo and if that was closed or clogged, the motor will overheat. Make sure that will allow water to flow freely. If either of these is clogged, the raw water pump impeller will be damaged, too.

If the dealer didn't inform you about cleaning this, he should have. How much instruction about maintenance was given?

we were on a salt water lake, there was no weeds or any blockage to the water system.
