I had one of my new neighbors stop by the house to check it out. I went out the garage to meet him and start the tour. We walk through the garage, then the laundry room, stop in the small hallway to view the pantry and my built-in shelving. We slowly turned to our right to enter the kitchen and all of a sudden I see this slimmey monster on the floor in the area of the Refigerator!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not being a fan of snakes,or being able to determine their deadlyness, I assume this must be the variety that can kill you simply with a glance..........almost like Chuck Norris. So I grab a boom and try to direct it towards the laundry room with the hopes of getting it the hell out of the house. No such luck!!!! Instead of taking a left turn in the small hallway, he/ she decides the pantry closet would be an excellent hiding place. So, once in there...........I hold the door shut with the broom.

The guy I was showing the house to, was also not a big fan of retiles, but knew one of the other neighbors loved snakes...........so he calls her and tells her of our dilema. She quickly makes her way there, and in a matter of minutes, has the situation in hand! I now have Suzan on my speed dial:D

At least now I know the sounds I would hear in the house, when I was there working late, were not my imagination.

My guess is a rat snake. Last weekend, I was going to wash the car. I went into this flower bed by our house and noticed the faucet still had the insulating cover on it from winter. It wasn't on very tight so I lift it off, and as I do, I look down in the thing to see a snake very similar to that one curled up in it. I said something loud, dropped it, and ran like hell.

I was able to coax him out with a bb gun and suffice it to say, I didn't end up washing the car.

good snake to have ... along with black snakes ... they not only eat nice/rats they also keep away other unwanted snakes such as rattlesnakes and copperheads. Although i really dont like them, i try not to kill the good ones down at our lake house (TN) ... but the other ones are fair game for my 12 guage

looks alot like a rattlesnake except for the head. since it does not have the head shape of a poisonous snake it is harmless. well unless i see it then i hurt myself trying to run away!!! or blast a hole in the house with my 12 gauge!!!

Weenie! Rat snakes are great. Put it outside but if it comes back, just pick it up gently and place it on the ground. The rubber gloves are optional and they're not slimy. The scales are basically like little fingernails.

JimN

They harass other snakes that might be in their territory. Rattlers, by nature, aren't aggressive unless they're feeding (small heat signature) or defending themselves (large heat signature). Since snakes are reptiles, there won't be much of a signature since the harassing snake will assume the ambient temperature, but the rattler will know that something is after it. Most snakes have very good eyesight, although the burrowing ones don't see as well.

Most venomous snakes are democrats, the rat snake is however a republican and as such they just keep their distance. ;)

Here is what I had to battle with today. Talk about one pissed snake, it took everything I had to get him from around my neck (jk). He may not have had fangs but he sure struck everything I put in front of him.

In the end I was able to get him back in the grass. He was close to becoming a "hoe" snake. With the screened in pool he couldn't figure how to get back out, but I was able to guide him with the pool brush. I had it extended out about twenty-foot!

My garter snake got into the house once and mom was freaking out. My brother got the flower arrangement into a garbage can and when I got home from school, she told me to look in the can. When I saw it, I said, "Cool! You found it!". She swore it was 10' long and as thick as her leg.

OK, now that it can be seen on youtube, I'm changing my comment about it looking like a black racer.

I now think it looks like a BABY black racer. An adult would be about 8' long and thick as your wrist.

You could have use a large shovel, too. move slowly and let it crawl in, walk out and lay it on the ground.

If that thing had been 8' and as big as my wrist it would have been in a hole real quick. I tried to get it into a bucket and all it wanted to do is strike at it. I am no Steve Erwin! All snakes are poisonous to me!

gah!! snakes...

only one encounter so far, when putting in the swim raft / diving pier. Get it out there, and am sitting there in the water attaching the chains to their clevis pins and winding mechanics wire to hold the screws in place when a snake comes off the top of one of the barrels across my shoulder and into the water.

Nothing good about a snake under a swim raft at all. It was only a small one in the grand scheme, and I believe it was a blue racer, why the thing didn't get out of there in all the dragging to the shore and launching I have no clue but next year I am going to dump water all over the thing and scare everything living out of it. No where to escape under a swim raft...

No pics at the moment, but my girls and I found a 6 foot black rat snake in the garage. He did not want to leave, struck at everything I used to try to get him to leave. My neighbor came and got him before he became a 'hoe snake". We put him back in the woods. No wonder the mole that was tearing up my backyard disappeared a couple of weeks ago.
