I fell today while on 1 ski and slapped the water really hard on my left side. Lived with it till we were finished for the day and stopped by the ER on my way home to get checked out. Doc says I have a fractured rib and busted cartilage.
I've broken the ribs on the left side twice before, doing stupid things, question I have:
is there anything out there to wear that would help protect my ribs in the future? I have a barefoot suit (of course I didn't have it on) and vests (plain jane ones). Anything else?
All these years and falls and NOW I break bones.......gettin old sucks.

I've taken some nasty rib shot while hydrofoiling - found that the Oneill Law vest provides pretty good protection.

I cracked three ribs falling on my stick a few years ago. I think my newest vest may have helped cushion some of the blow (I have an O'Brien ballistic-looking one now) but my old vest was one of those old-school pads sewn together kinds.
Good luck getting back on your skis. It took me a month and a half off the water, and gingerly getting back up there.
Now, the busted eardrum was another matter.

Broken ribs are nasty. It can take a LONG time to get fully functional again.

A friend of mine showed up Friday morning with an old blank ski they used to step-off of for barefooting and was in the mood for a laugh, so he gave it to me to try.
I got up on it the first time. However, my 3rd fall, I busted a rib (again). Haven't gone to the ER yet. I think it's only bruised. But, since I have pic's, I had to share....
Here's the ski

I'm ripping it up (not quite course material though)

Ribs suck, I am 3 weeks yesterday from a good fall and not even close to getting back on the water. Did my ankle too. Maybe they will both come around in another few weeks. I am hoping it is not a season ender, but it sure is hanging around. Broke my other ankle 2 years ago and they sure do take time to recover. I think it stinks getting old.

Agree with BigMac on this one....the O'Neill Law vest holds the midsection together pretty tight with some pretty hefty padding. I've taken some hard falls the last few weeks and have banged everything up but the ribs.

use two skis:) wear your barefoot suit. I hit the water hard jumping the wake out of the hole, landed on my side, head slapped the water and I punchered an ear drum if that makes you feel any better.
