Ok, so I bought the EI conversion kit, but my distributor doesn't look like the others I've seen on here, the two screws holding the plate in are sideways, so first it was a pain to get the old plate out, but now the new plate doesn't have spots for those sideways screws and actually the plate doesn't even fit inside the distributor. But even though it doesn't fit inside the distributor with the rotor on everything seems to be lined up and the cap still fits normally, so it seems like it would work if there was a way to screw the new plate down. Anyone have ideas?

You need to also provide some more info, like year model boat, engine manufacturer, brand of kit you purchased, where you purchased the kit among other info, so we can maybe assist, other than that,37256

Sorry forgot about that stuff. It is an '85 w/ 351W, I purchased the Pertronix 1581 for the prestolite dist w/ clip down cap from Summit Racing.

As you can see here, http://www.skidim.com/products.asp?dept=1113, there are two different Prestolite kits for up to '86 and '87 and up and there may be where you problem lays. Somehow Summit may have shipped you the wrong Pertronics kit. I used the Prestolite on our '89 and it was a effortless install with very clear, easy instructions and information.

Looks like the difference is either clip down cap or screw down cap. I also bought http://www.skidim.com/prodinfo.asp?number=RA108002 which is a new cap for up to 86 (clip down) which does not fit either, so it seems that maybe the distributor has been changed, however I can't find any p/n or anything on the distributor. Is there anyone with an 86 or older with a distributor like mine? I might end up just purchasing a whole new marine EI distributor.

I would think there may be a tag, plate or decal somewhere on the distributor that was painted over that may give the distributor info. You could be correct about the distributor swap and you might not even have a marine distributor in there.

It looks like a mallory distributor, from some pictures i've found it looks the same. Not sure if it is a marine distributor still so it is probably worth the piece of mind to replace the entire thing. Anyone know of some distributor options?

You can ask our local TT dealers about availability, cost and/or compare here, http://www.skidim.com/products.asp?dept=1114

These engines are Left Hand rotation correct? Also would that make it CCW distributor rotation?
Thanks for your help!

I would talk to whomever you buy from to make sure you get the correct one!

Those pictures are of an old Mallory YH marine distributor. Check your tags or go to MalloryPerformance.com to get the correct EI for your distributor

It's running!!! Looks like I have the Mallory YL series distributor installed so I bought the Mallory e-spark conversion kit(uses an optical sensor and a shutter wheel instead of magnets) and the correct cap and it was a piece of cake to install. It fired right up after the install, still need to set the timing but at least it is running! Thank you to everyone for your help!
