We have a 92 prostar 205 with 320 hours on it. When we are pulling someone out of the water on a waterski and shift from neutral to forward, there is a thud as iwe move the lever quickly from neutral to forward gear. We have been engaging the throttle slowly to avoid this. Is this normal? With our old boat, we were able to move easily from neutral to forward.

If the thud occurs because the engine is at too high of RPM when shifting from neutral to gear there are a couple places to check: if the cables are not connected properly at the shift lever or the lever itself may have a problem; or the shift cable is not adjusted properly. An easy way to check for these problems is to remove the shift lever from the transmission. With the engine in neutral at idle move the transmission into gear. If there is not a thud, then you have isolated the problem to those two areas.
