Called for an appointment for oilchange today and found out my boat mechanic has passed away due to heart attach. He has got me thru 1200 hours of pain free boating. Though now that im retired and have the time thought i'd start my own maintance. Boat has 351..what is recomended oil and filter?

Not sure what the part number is, but I'd recommend either a WIX or NAPA oil filter. Stay away from FRAM.

For oil, I use 15W40 Pennzoil Marine. I think the 15W40 Pennzoil Heavy Duty (performance) is also good. Some use Shell Rotella 15W40 also.

Make sure that whatever oil you are using has ZDDP (the Penzoil Marine and Rotella multi weight don't ahve it). The flat tappet cames need the extra protection. Valvoline VR1 20w 50 is a good choice. I second the Napa Gold filters the part number for the 351w is #1515

Why doesn't anybody recommend using the oil filters from Mastercraft and their dealers?

Why doesn't anybody recommend using the oil filters from Mastercraft and their dealers?

Three reasons.

#1 Napa/Wix filters are known to be some of the highest quality out there
#2 Most have a Napa within about 5 minutes of their home (my nearest dealer is an hour and a half away)
#3 Price

I use Amsoil 15w40 diesel/marine oil and an Amsoil filter, I can't remember the number off the top of my head.
