I have what is probably an easy outboard motor question. I am in the process of replacing the water pump in a 1987 Johnson 40hp (Loopcharged small) and I am in the process of removing the gear case to get access to the pump. However I am running into a small problem and I am kind of stumped since I dont have a service manual. There is a small dia rod that looks to follow the cetner line of the steering pivot point and that rod is attached to the gear case and I am a not sure how to remove it to free the gear case. I can lower the gear case about 1/2 to 3/4 but then this rod keeps it from being completely removed. I am sure there is a tech on the forum who has probably done this a million times can someone please help.
