Anyone ride the 04 F 1?? What do you think??

Iíve been looking around for a used ski. I think I would like to try the F 1, and the Sixam. I have been on an old Connelly Rocket for years and think its time for a change. I guess I am going to have to use Dougs method of ski buying as I have no shop nearby to offer me demo rides. SO, Iím stuck with ebay and Ski It Again.

Any thoughts on that F 1??

My brother in law has either the 03 or 04 F1 and loves it. My wife rode one and liked it as well, but ended up getting the Truth. I rode an older F1, but couldn't give it a fair evaluation because it had a toe plate on it and they drive me nuts.

Some people are talking about it on the Nicholls site. In a word or two, fast ski, turns well. Also a review on Schnitz's site.

His buddy, Bert, gave it a very good review in 2004 if I recall correctly.

I ride a 68" 03 F1 and I love it although I find it is a bit on the heavy side compared to the 05 model.

There's an '04 F1 for sale on Ebay that I put a minimum bid in for the heck of it. I don't think I'll bid again, so if you want it, it's yours.

I ski on an 03 F1 and also love it. It turns great. However, it does not like to go straight. When I pull out to prepare to enter the gates, I, for some reason, have a hard time getting it to roll onto an edge to initiate the turn. It's probably just me.

Sounds like an interesting problem. Are you saying that your ski is always edge hunting but not when you are making a turn into the gates? Mine doesn't like to go in a straight line either, the only time this is a problem is when I am making a loop to go back into the slalom course, been slammed a couple of times if I am not concentrating on keeping my weight back. Maybe you should play around with your fin adjustment.

"Does not like to go straight" is symptomatic of a lot of high performance skis I've ridden. Not so much on the CDX, but that 02 Mapple sure did like to edge hunt.

Thanks Pete but he has the tabs cut off of the bindings to fit 9 Ĺ. I use a 10. That is a good ski at that price.

The old ski I am on will slap down almost every rider on it. It loves the edge. It has made both of my ski buddies faces red. They hate it..

What's your budget for a new stick ?

MarkP
04-07-2005, 09:34 PM
I would rather not spend 500 for a used ski but it depends what Iím looking at. I almost had a used sixam (blank) for 400 over the winter, add bindings to that and I guess I was looking at 6 or 700, but I missed it. I think that would have been a great deal.

Iím kind of aching for a new ski. Its making it hard to wait to find the ski I want used.

Monza will run you big bucks. They've got new CDXs at Wiley's again. You might also try Bennetts. They sell their demo stuff, which is practically new, for next to nothing. New bindings are cheap there, too.

Thanks Brian,

I love that site. Those two 03s are a little pricey for what they are (03s) 04s can be had for 299 blank (free shipping) right now. I just need to get the best deal possible if I go for an F 1 because I may have to pull a Doug and sell it and buy a different ski. OR use it until I find ďThe SkiĒ

Mark, give Bennetts a call. 1-800-869-7297 They usually have more in stock than is available on the webpage. The deals on their demo stuff were hard to beat. I sold the ASX my wife skied on for a while for more than we paid for it when all was said and done.

I'm in Orlando now and will take lessons with Lucky Lowe the next few days. Perhaps he can help me solve the edge hunting problem. Stay tuned.

I have an '03 and '04 I love them both, but the 04 seems to be a little quicker. I did a WS clinic last year and the pro (Wade Williams) told me I had my weight too far back. Once I got my weight centered more and let the ski do it's thing, well words can not describe the beauty of the ski. I LOVE IT!!

The 66 F1 on ebay looks cool but its got to be like an 02 or something. Small bindings too. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=71174&item=7151954472&rd=1

I am certainly not qualified to offer advice on anything BUT,:D .

Just thinking about how my Rocket acts/responds similarly. Have you tried to lean back a bit more before you ask it to turn?

:twocents: FWIW - If you lean back more (thus shifting your weight back), you will stall the ski and it will be even more reluctant to turn. You may want to check out the March '05 issue of Waterski Magazine. There is a small piece on page 50 (at the bottom) that gives good advice on body position during the turn.

Also check out the April 2005 issue, page 70. This is an article on the pre-gate pullout.

I remember the older Rockets being tough to turn and recall needing to really, really, get forward on the ski (by flexing the ankles and driving the hips forward) to get it to do anything. FWIW, I've always found that I need to get more forward, no matter what the ski. Leaning back just makes a big spray and puts you in crappy body position for the pull.

Iím not sure if this weekend will work out or not. But I hope by the weekend after. I should have the new ski by then but maybe not bindings. Oh man thatís going to kill me to have a new, to me, ski and have to keep it home. I am trying to find a good price on bindings. I found some new Phantoms in Large for 275 but I would like to do better or find used.

Very nice! Congrats! I keep eyeing the phantom/approach, too, but will probably stick with the animals. They're very comfortable boots and get the job done nicely. Which flex on the sixam?

I got the 1.0. The ski that I am on right now is like an I beam so I should be ok. Iím thinking I can get a little speed out of the new ski, just so the (what did you call it) chicken switch, doesnít kick in.:o .
