I need to replace the battery in mky 02 X-star. This is what I have in there now: Interstate Deep Cycle HD24-DP, 405 CCA, 505 MCA. I was told that this really isn't the right battery for this boat? What would be a suggested replacement?
First of all, you should be using a cranking battery for starting any motor, not deep cycle(it may be OK for a little outboard motor but anything larger than about 25HP needs a cranking battery). Those are for accessories and deep discharging. Get an Interstate Cranking battery. I'm surprised it lasted this long.
A motor needs a lot of instant current, not the ability to deep discharge (which does NOT mean that you can kill it and have it come back all hunky-dory) and provide a lot of Amp-Hours. BTW, deep discharge means going to about 10VDC and then stopping the draw, so it can re-charge.
