View Full Version : What is the ultimate 197/X7 barefoot setup

I need to order a new X7/197 and I want to make sure I get the ultimate setup for barefooting.

I am thinking the X7 over the 197 because the tower is standard and I prefer the graphics.

I now know the MCX with a 1:1 gearbox in an X7 produces a top speed of 43mph but this is simply not fast enough for the larger guys to barefoot.

I am thinking the LY6 is the only option but what gearbox should I chose, what prop should I run and what other considerations do I need to make.

Does anyone have specific realistic data of top speed (measured on GPS) of a LY6 in a X7/197 (with tower).

What are all you barefooters out there running?

We do do a bit of slalom also.

i had an '02 TT 197 with the LQ9 and a powerslot ... that boat smoked. it would pull me (200 lbs) and my 275 lbs buddy 47 mph ...

I know that for barefooting, you definitely want to get the LY6.

Not that I foot, but that's what my dealer told me. And he's usually dead on with advice. He actually suggested I go with the mcx unless I foot, which I don't.

[email protected] would be the best guy to ask about props.

Sorry I can't offer any better info, but some smarter guys than me should be along soon.

LY6 for sure...I have the MCX 1:1, and with me at 195 lbs it's marginal for getting into more advanced tricks. It's great if you keep both feet on the water, do tumbles, backwards, but one foots are at WOT and could use another couple mph. GPS speed max's out at 44.5 with a 3-blade Acme 843, but lose 1 or 2 mph while pulling someone. Tower is a great option to have, just installed one on mine for this very purpose. Good luck with your setup-

Can you only get a 1:1 ??? What about the 1.23 or 1.5? I tried making one, but it didn't give me a trans option. Really???

Without a doubt get the Ly6. Or better yet, go for the 8100 if they still offer it in a 197/X7

If you are in the 200 lb range with size 10 1/2 feet like me you will want the LY6. This was the dilema I had. I had a 2003 PS197 with a MCX and 1:1 tranny. It topped at 42.5 per gps. With all the different props I tried I still couldn't get more speed out of it. I finally gave up on the 03 and bought an 07 that I traded in and got an 08. Both that were setup the same with the LY6 and the 1.26:1 tranny (this is the only tranny for the LY6). This setup now allows me to barefoot without feeling like I am sinking. The 07 topped at just over 48 mph and the 08 tops at just under 48 mph. I can now barefoot at 45.5 mph compared to the 41 that I used to with my 2003. I also pull multiple barefooters that are 200 lbs plus each and the boat stays in the 43-44 mph range compared to the 39 that the MCX used to hold with two of us back there.

As for X-7 or 197 it really doesn't matter from a top end speed. A few more pounds is going to slow you down a little, but not that much. My 2008 197 is setup exactly the same as an X-7 except I have an 07 mini tower on it instead of the full tower. Put it this way the only option this boat doesn't have is the shower.

There are a couple of draw backs with the LY6 though. Heaters and showers are useless in them in cold water. The engines run so cold that you cannot get any hot water to run the heater or the shower. The other thing is there is an intake whistle that will drive you nuts until you figure out how to seal the clam shell. I used foam pipe insulation and sliced it down the middle so it fits between the clam shell to dampen the whistle. I thought about rounding the sharp edge over on the throttle plate, but can't get the nerve up to do it.

Good luck.

What is the HYD barefoot plate? and what does it do?

Does it affect the slalom wake or is it removable?
