View Full Version : New Rudder pulls to right hard

had a stock rudder on my 05 197 and 3 to 4 inches of play in wheel before rudder moved the boat to either side but no pull sorta neutral. Now factory installed a new competition rudder with a ridge on the right side & it pulls hard to the right but no slop in the wheel!! File the left side?

If you file the opposite side to the same degree, you will get the rudder back to a neutral position.

File the left side if you want to reduce the pull. Be careful, though. It does not take as much to negate the effect. Its up to you, but careful about making the boat 'neutral' - it could come back to haunt you with a boat that just wanders all over the place/course.
Just went the through the same issue with a new rudder on my 05 197TT and I took just a slight amount (1/8") off of the left corner to reduce the pull slightly.

You could have found a bunch of info here, http://www.tmcowners.com/teamtalk/showthread.php?t=22800&highlight=Rudder, in the General Discussion Forum where everyone would see it and it wouldn't get lost!

I'd suggest you give it some time and get used to the pull. Once you do, there's a good chance you'll not want to drive a boat without a loaded rudder again.

Don't file the rudder. Once you get used to the pull you'll realize its the only way to have it.

It's an 06 rudder I guess? Went to the factury & they put it on.

I think there were two versions of the 06 Rudder. One was "competition" which meant it was loaded/ground for a right hand pull on the wheel. This is a good thing IMO.

Yeah, ETS is right. There are two versions of the retrofit rudder. There is the 197 rudder, which is 'balanced' and the TT rudder, which is filed on the right trailing edge and pulls hard to the right.

The one the factory put in is the TT & pulls hard to right. I filed about 1/32 off the left side and it is better. Have a new problem now after 2 outings the bilge has what appears to be clear grease or vaseline in it and about 3 inches of water!!! This re-fit was done at the factory in Vonore and I did not watch how they put in the new rudder. Could the seal on the rudder be bad and what I am seeing is the grease packing?
