View Full Version : Chicago area places to take the boat out?

I just moved to Glenview from Atlanta. I know it is a little bit away, but wanted to see where the good places to take the boat are.

Even though the levels are low on Lake Lanier, I took the boat out and wakeboarded before I came up here. Sure, with a wetsuit on, but it was good to get back out there!

Hope to meet some fellow mastercrafters around the area.

Fox river is two blocks from my house. It is so high this year it flooded restaurants along the river.

Welcome to the Icy North, it was a cold snowy winter and it was one of the worst one we have seen in years. We have a little more water than you had down South this last year. I drove by Atlanta and saw the low lake levels this December. Do you know if they have come back up any?
Just checked the Fox Waterway is all no wake. Although the Ice just melted and I would not want to jump in, shrinkage just thinking about it.
The IL River down by Ottawa is very nice

Hey Eric,
Are you going to do an Ice footing run again this year? That was wicked to see the pics of the large ice chunks in the water were you were footing in. You might have missed the ice this year.
We must be a bunch of babies this year; nobody is taking of going out yet, and that includes me???

If you come downstate about 150 miles to the east central part of the state there is Clinton Lake. Take I-57 south to I-74 west to Farmer City (yes Farmer City your in the midwest now) and follow the signs to Clinton Lake. It's a power plant lake and when it first started up it was shutting down quit often with problems and the local joke was "send Monica Lewinsky to take care of it, if anyone can get Clinton up it's her!!! 150 miles may be a little short though, I'm shootin from the hip on distance guessing. Then a little farther down is Lake Shelbyville and it's a little over 200 miles and this is all depending on if your in a traveling mood. Take I-57 south to Tuscola or Arcola and look for the Lake Shelbyville signs. And also remember that any lake you have been to before on the weekend is no different from these, very busy!!! Goodluck and welcome to the MasterCraft mothership!!!

edit: Forgot to tell, there's no ice and no gators here!!!

Hey Troy, Too Tall,
Man Iím jealous, I really wanted to go down last weekend, but had to stay and work. Did you meet up with the guys from Midwest wakeboarder? I think that they went down that weekend as well. I also think that Dave went down with his yellow XStar as well.

reviving and old thread...we are moving to the north side of Chicago (havn't bought a house yet) in June from St Louis. I was looking on the map and was thinking the quickest way to get to to good water would be to go north or northwest.

I've heard a lot of people talk about the Fox River by St. Charles, but that is more West and was wondering about some of the other lakes including Fox Lake Area, Geneva Lake, Twin Lakes. I like rivers too. Maybe up to 1.5 hours from Glenview, Lake Forest area. I know at some point you'll start running into the boaters from Milwaukee.

Also, any clubs that have access to a private lake?

Thx

Fox river and twin lakes get crazy busy on weekends,,,so its morning skiiing there...but good water...lake geneva, and fox lake have sea walls so a lot of wave rebound. I like lake geneva in the evening out of lynn pier or fontana.

In the south we boat on the illinois - I live in the joliet area and head down river to get free waters.
