You would probably start crying if I told you where my teak has been all winter. So as soon as the boat gets unshrinkwrapped that is one of the first things to be done. That and the stereo/tower spears and a good coat of wax on the boat!

NO, not at all! Thats the best part of this stuff I use. You can find it here. www.shieldproducts.com
it's cost about $60.00 per quart, and you'll only use about 1/3 of it. Thats about 4-5 coats. lasts up to 2 years without recoating!

Yes, it's the Teak shield. You don't have to order it if you have a Fastnall co. in your area. They stock it, however, the Fastnall here only stocks it in the Gallon containers. As I said before, 5 coats is only about 1/3 of a quart. Still expensive, but once its on there, you can forget about it for at least 2 yrs. And no, it is NOT slippery when wet. Unlike urethane, huh Tricky?!:D

Sorry, but an actual teak question here if anyone has a suggestion...

Too cold this weekend to wet sand, and no place to do it in the basement. I did do an initial washdown with soapy water days ago when it was warm and wet sanded with 400gr. Not smooth enough. After it dried I hit it with the orbital + 220grit pad. Nice and smooth now. Hoping to avoid using any more water otherwise this will take a lot longer.

Have not Star Brited it yet. Do I have to wash it w/water first? Can I do it dry from this point? Dry sand and vacuum off / wipe with soft towels after each round of sanding? Obviously this will save me a bunch of time.

Once you have washed/removed of any dust from the previous wood sandings, you can start applying the sealer preserver to it. But, do it in thin coats, by hand, 1 coat, 2nd coat, then sand if you wish, but thin coats will allow it to dry good prior to sanding. If you apply it with a brush and too thick it will not want to dry good and will be gummy. I always recommend applying 2 coats between sandings and using finer paper as you progress till you get to the point you want to stop and you are happy with it.

Roonie's Nice slab of teak!
Not every day that MasterCraft will put together five good planks of teak on one platform

Did you sand between coats of teak oil? If so, what grit
How long between sanding and oil or oil and sanding?

I started with 80 grit hand sand and then went to 150 before first coat of oil. Then let it dry over night and sanded lightly with 220 and applied second coat of oil. I lightly sanded it with 600 and another coat of oil. I lightly sanded with 1200 and did my final and fourth coat of oil. I thought of doing a fifth coat but I did't want it to be slippery.

Only four coats of oil as I thought I did five but I guess not. Did this the end of last year. I will put another coat of teak on at the start of this year just for good measure even though it hasn't gotten any use other then sitting out in the weather for a month at the dealers waiting to get winterized last fall.

It has been stored inside my garage all winter.

Just finished putting the first coat on it today. Before and after pics. Routed edge ended up looking great. Went back and routed the inside rails too.

First off, I want to thank No1. His Teak process is great. I bought my first MC back in Dec, but didn't get to take it home until 2 weeks ago. Since then I have been getting it ready for the season, and I started with the Teak. No1, I followed your process to the letter... and I'll let you be the judge.
