OJ Props in Loudon!
As you leave the plant on Excellance Way, go to stoplight @ Hwy. 72, turn right, go about 9 miles to Hwy 11/Mulberry Street, turn right, travel thru Loudon, TN, across the river to Natalie Blvd on left, to 2nd building on the right #750 Natalie Blvd., on the corner of Natalie and Kimberley Way, you'll see the sign. Bu is at the end of the street, :( but you don't want to go there!:o

ask to see the basement AND the records room.
Sea ray is built just across the cove there from MC and the only reason I'd wan to visit there is to see them building those HUGE boats.

If you have the time, I'd highly suggest that you take a quick spin through the Malibu plant..it will give you a great perspective on why you pay what you pay for a MC and why MC's are built so much better......A TRUE APPRECIATION FOR THE MC YOU HAVE.
Tell Wingo I said Hello. (Most likely the guy that will take you on your tour and very knowledgable).

Cool. Get us some pictures of some piles of fiberglass scraps. and some sawdust or metal scraps too. I always like seeing that in any type of shop or factory tour.

That reasons not good enough for me to get into a Malibu facotry8p

I hate to burst your bubble but I'd be VERY surprised if he is able to take any pics while in the plant. Manufacturer's are funny that way which is why most, if not all, corporate issued phones and Blackberry's don't have cameras and why many companies require you to check your camera phone at the front desk if you are visiting. I'm not saying MC has all these rules but I wouldn't be surprised.

I'm on MC number 3 or 4 and while it sounds like a somewhat goofy thing to do, especially considering that I would not consider buying a BU, it is VERY interesting. On my last factory tour, (yes, you will want to do it more than once), I took some extra time and went over to the BU factory and took their tour. I asked before walking in if I could take photo's and they said YES (I even told them to tell me if there was anything that I was not permitted to photo, giving them the option and leaving the door open). Needless to say, I took somewhere in the vacinity of 200+ photo's and was not stopped once...something that I certainly would not have allowed if I were in their shoes.
Then, we headed over to MECA (aka, the MC FACTORY), where Chris Wingo toured us around and we again took photo's of everything...afterall MC has nothing to hide. Surprised they let you do this, sure, but again, when you are the best at what you do, what do you have to hide.
Enjoy the tour.

Well, you got me there! I am surprised though as I've had the opportunity to visit a number of plants (nothing marine related) and pictures have always been totally forbidden and with camera phones being as popular as they are they often require those to be checked at the front desk.

I guess it just shows that MC is proud enough of their boats and manufacturing they don't care who sees them. That's pretty refreshing!

I know what your sayin, we worked in a Dell Computer plant a couple of years ago and camera were forbidden.

But I could carry a complete set of drawings with detailed info about their system right out the front door no questions asked.....

Certainly surprised me as well, which is why I kept asking if I could take photo's of different things, etc., as I did not want my camera card to be taken away at the end of the tour. I've been through MC's plant 2-3 times now, the last time being March/April of last year, and I was free to take as many photo's as I liked.
It is very refreshing to see a company that allows this and is proud enough of their product to welcome photo's.

We have visited the MC plant at least once a year for the last 19 years and have always had the chance to take pictures, but there may be some areas that they are forbidden and you will be told. Again, if you are a owner and someone knows you at Vonore is one thing , but the average Joe may be a industrial spy and MC has it's limits on picture taking, IIRC!

Doug,

You should tour the Malibu plant. Just walk in with a MasterCraft shirt on under a sweatshirt and take off the sweatshirt half way thru the tour!

And if they ask why you have it...Tell them you just came from touring the best boat manufacturer in the wakeboard boat industry! See what they say to that!

That area around Loudon and Monroe counties is not a real exciting place on the weekends unless you go to Knoxville, 30 minutes away, Maryville, 30 minutes away, Gatlinburg/ Pigeon Forge/Seiverville, 90 minutes away. That area is rather rural and a lot of industry!

Boy do you have it right, there is really nowhere good to eat, and "downtown" Loudon has a bunch of blinged out cars, which scared me somewhat. We did drive through the Smokey Mountains yesterday, and went around "Cade's Cove", that was enjoyable, but my dad had trouble choosing to navigate by my mom and a map, or by the GPS (named Jessy after my rather direction impaired sister). But we're seeing the factory today and heading home, maybe tonight at 10 I'll post a few pics, but I doubt that.

Ok, don't kill me, but I have to ask......I've owned a Malibu, and now own a Mastercraft.

I've toured the Malibu factory, but never the Mastercraft factory. In looking at those pics, the production environment/methods seem almost identical to what I saw at the Malibu plant.

Everyone keeps saying what a POS the Malibu plant is compared to the MC plant. Is this just some heavy brand loyalty showing (yeah, I know what board I'm on), or is there something I'm missing here that makes the MC production stand head and shoulders over the Bu?

I'm not a boat building expert or anything, so I'm not trying to argue a point, just saying what I've seen. If someone could educate me on the differences in what I'm looking at in this post vs what I remember, I'd appreciate it.

About 1 year ago I toured both plants back to back on the same day, starting with the BU plant. While some of the production methods may appear to be the same, when touring, you will quickly note that MC provides a very clean environment and a logical progression of the boat building process. An example is that I was constantly stepping on paper, wrappings, stepping over boxes, etc. at the BU plant.
At any point throughout the MC tour you can easily see where each boat is in terms of production, as it moves down the line, however, at BU, it appeared to be a much less organized effort.
At one pont in the BU factory I watched as a floor was assembled from individual pieces that resembled a jigsaw puzzle, on the floor. The pieces were fiberglassed together at the joint, dried and then put into place...the MC floor is all one big piece that is pressed in and fits like a glove (just one example).
I can go on and one and certainly do not intend to bash as I do have the photo's to back-up what I am saying), but I have said it before and stick by it....take the tours and you will see why you pay the extra for the MC quality and you will be thankful for it.

Thanks jkski----that's the type of answer I was looking for when I originally asked the question.

Sounds like MC has more of a ISO 900X process in place than does Malibu.....that's good to know, and I appreciate the insight.

Thanks jkski----that's the type of answer I was looking for when I originally asked the question.

Sounds like MC has more of a ISO 900X process in place than does Malibu.....that's good to know, and I appreciate the insight.

I'd have to search a bit for them, but if you would like the photo's just shoot me a PM with your email address.
I do not think that it would be in good taste to post them here, nor would it be appreciated by MC, as we all already know why we bought an MC, no need to rub it in!!!

My family and I have rented a cabin in the Smokey's near Pigeon Forge for spring break. We are taking a day trip over to Vonore to tour the factory. :D Woo Hooo !

We started looking at where we could go that was driveable to avoid the cost of airfare, and we ended up with TN. The trip should be fun, we are planning to do a rafting trip, the factory tour, some hiking in the National park, and just plain relax.

My wife gave me one task before we go. Find out where the BEST bar-b-que is in that area. Harold, or anyone else who would like to provide feedback, please help a fellow MC owner keep his wife happy.

Thanks,

Steve

-Calhoun's near stoplight #3/Hwy 321 in Pigeon Forge has so good ribs and steaks!
-Great breakfast at the Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant (white /green farmhouse), (not Applewood Grill) Apple Valley Road, at intersection with Comfort Inn/Walgreen's. The best grilled country ham you'll ever eat! Just don't eat too much of the apple fritters, muffins and apple butter before your food comes! Lunch and dinner great too! If you visit the Applewood Barn General Store next door, don't go behind it and get any apple turnovers, they will drive you crazy!
-Great breakfast, lunch and dinner at Old Mill Restaurant, behind Riverside Tower, on the Little Pigeon River. Pigeon Forge.
-If you like catfish and fried chicken family style, try Popeyes Catfish & Chicken.
-Remember, always ask the locals too, as to where to eat!

Thanks TMC! Just what I was looking for.:D

Hope there is still enough activity at the factory to see some boats in progress, but either way, it will be fun to see where my "baby" was built.

Normally the tours are held around 2:00pm, but I'd still ask ahead of time. You may want to call ahead and verify everything, just to be safe. PM @ you.
If you go near lunchtime, there are plenty chain restaurants in Maryville after you get thru town if your traveling on Hwy. 321, to Hwy. #411, to Hwy.#72 from Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg, as that's the easiest way cross country. There is also a nice little restaurant, (IIRC, Riverside) on the left right at the intersection of Hwy.411 and Hwy.72 leaving Vonore going towards the factory from Maryville, great food, reasonable, with daily specials.
