I started with 160 on a random orbit and hit it quickly. Then progressed by hand to 400 and gave it the first coat. But the platform is fairly new. It was just dirty. So first coat of sealer went on after the 400 grit sanding. Wet sanded between coats with 600, 800, 1000, and 1200. And I put the coats on very thin. I plan to put a couple more coats on since it is all set up in my basement and I can't use the boat yet anyway. And according to my good buddy Harold, the finish takes a few months to really get hard, at which point I can hit it with 1500 and 2000 grit for a real smooth finish. Course by that time it will probably be beat to heck.:o

How about a few pic's of yours? I'll have to go find your thread.

She had caterac (sp) surgery on one eye and in a few weeks will do the other. Nothing was discussed but wear the glasses if the sun botheres her eye. She hasn't worn them but a couple times in 2 weeks.

Don't get the teak sealer! I made that mistake last year. I used the tropical light sealer. #1 uses starbrite teak oil in the white bottle. I am using that on my new platform. The "oil" is actually a sealer. The sealer also has pigment in it. So it's almost like staining your platform. Don't get me wrong. It looked good. But when I saw #1's in May last year I couldn't believe the difference. And the white bottle is like half the price of the sealer sold in the cans.

I don't know why Harold isn't answering Monica's question, though.

Um, let me go look at my teak oil bottle. I don't think it says sealer on it. If what #1 is talking about then that pdf really, really needs to be changed to say teak sealer OIL for sure.

This is the bottle #1 recommends. It says "teak oil", but in smaller print it also says "penetrating sealer". Star Brite is the cause of the confusion, imo. That's why I bought the wrong product last year.

Hey Tim. which part of AL? I am at Smith btw...

Perfect timing for this thread. I am on my last winter project which is restoring my teak. After looking at these i am jealous. i went through a whole bottle of cleaner (~3/4) and even went to washing with a grey scotch pad. It was still ugly! It was so bad i resorted to a belt sander and my DA with 80 grit to get it level and cleaned. there were so many swelled spots and the grainy part was very deep in places etc..there was no way to block sand it out. I saw this post the other day and took some "semi-before" pics which i will post from home. Mine is a 92 PS and has the slotted portions. I am currently hand sanding those. What a PITA...but hopefully finish that tonight, probably will start with 220 wet and work my way up. Looking at ya'lls platfoms keeps my motivation up!! Looking good!!

That pdf article was done by MasterCraft and there is no way for me to edit it, although the info was given to them originally, sorry.

The confusion really stems from Starbrite themselves. The clearly advertise the white bottled product as "teak oil" but then describe it in smaller print as "penetrating sealer". If you had called the product "oil" it would cause the same amount of confusion. And clearly the bottle is shown in the article. With all that said, I managed to buy the wrong product last year.
