Fuel Gauge Problem!

I have a fuel gauge that functions intermittently. My Mastercraft is 91 Prostar with a mechanical sending unit that has been replaced twice.

Most of the time the gauge will show empty. Other times it will seem to operate correctly for a while until it is around the 1/2 to 3/4 mark. Then the needle will stay at the 1/2 full mark until is trailered home.

Sometime between then and the next time out it will reset to empty.

I've read through the old archives and have never seen anyone describe the intermittent nature that I have described.

I have removed the gauge and checked its operation independently and it seems to work fine.

I am sort of thinking it may be a grounding issue.

Welcome, TonyB. While most people tend to have issues with their fuel sending units, it looks as if you've already addressed that issue. I'm sure someone will offer some good adivce soon. Until then, glad to have you here.

I had a similar problem on my 85 and I had two different issues. One was that the sending unit was bad. I took it out and made sure that I had a good ground and tested it and then replaced it with a new one. When I put the new one in, I thought that I had everything grounded and hooked up properly but sometime after I tested it I must have went back and tightened the ground wire and caused it to lose contact. When I went back and did my trouble shooting I found the bad ground, fixed it and now everything works correctly.

I have a '91, and mine would stick at 3/4 of tank. I sucked up it up and bought one of the new style sending units. I think it was $105 through Rambo Marine. I think it's well worth the money. I played with my old one trying to get it to work without success. I got stranded one time running out of gas, and that was it, ordered the new one the next day and it works perfectly. :twocents:
