i have a 2000 x star with the 330hp LTR was taking the alternator off and noticed that there r 3 wires running to it.there is a bigger red one which im guessing is going to the battery, tan there is a small black one and a small purple one..anyone know what those ones are.

only 3? normally there are 4,

Battery pos, ground, Field and voltage sensing for the regulator

ground could be accomplished through the block. But often there is an additional ground for the alt.


I would look for stamped symbols on the body, I don't know them by color, but they are responsible for the regulation of output as the alternator output is up and down regulated to produced the powered oomph for the engine and electronics.

yea i took only three wires off...i need a high output alternator and to get the right one im in need of the functions of those wires..i wish they werent so damn exspensive
