I have a 1987 PS 190. i cant get a constant 12 volts to my coil from the wire off the solenoid. This is how the boat was when i got it. Is it right this way or wrong. I have already replaced the solenoid x2. Anybody got any pointers for me?

Does it start?

What's the reading across the battery terminals? Do you have the voltage there?

Have you tried running a hot wire to the battery to see if that changes it?

I guess I would trace the voltage back step by step till I found where the voltage drop was hitting.

if i bring my 12 across the battery with a jumper i cant shut the motor off with the switch

right i was refering to it as a method to troubleshoot.

I am still not sure if your boat starts or not

yes it will run as long as you hold the key in the start position

IIRC, the coil will receive less than 12V because of the ballast resistor drops it down to something like 8V, it's a Ford thing. If electronic ignition is installed in the distributor the ballast resistor has to be bypassed and in most cases a 12V coil needs to replace the lower volt coil. If it runs only in the crank/starter mode of the ignition, but stops when you move to the run position, check the kill switch. I had that problem and a bad kill switch was the culpert.

I have 12 volts on the run side of the switch. I just cant get 12 volts after the engine starts and i release the switch to the run pos. I dont know what else to try other than running a wire from the switch(run pos) to the coil. I really dont want to rig it, But i know the wiring is not right by looking at it. It is a UGLY mess and i have frazzled my brain trying to figure it out. Wish i had a diagram... GOT ONE?

the kill switch was removed by the previous owner. the purple wires are butt connected together in the dash.

thanks for all the help folks, i hope i can come up with a diagram so i can just rewire the whole system the right way. Again thank you.
