I have an X-45 with the MCX and looking at going to an XStar, any thought on this would be great. My big question is the pros and cons on the LY6 vs the 8.1 in the X Star:confused:

It depends on how much weight your going to putting in the boat.....
Lots of weight.... L18
Stock or a little more.... LY6

Go for the L18 for the resale value!

No replacement for displacement. The L18 is just more of everything.

This topic has been discussed at length before. I think it all boils down to $$$. Of course the L18 would provide more torque and hp. If you need that extra power for the extra cost is your call. From what I've read on here and with my experience as an X-star owner with an MCX engine, I would think the LY6 is the perfect choice. Do they even offer the L18 anymore??? Heard this may be the last year for it in an X-star.

That was my first question.

Yeah, but I'm sure the 8100 H.O. would be adequate.

Jcraig- I have on order an 08 Xstar and have been down this road before, I also have seen this discussed on here at length and really have to dissagree with the opinions expressed so far. The 8.1 is first and formost an engine that WILL be discontinued in the future, making it a dead man walking. Second, burns oil-It consumes it, it is a pain. I have seen it first hand on more than 1 boat. Third I have driven an Xstar with both. The 8.1 does not have a noticable difference in power over the LY6 at the altitude that you will be running. The cost up front is more and trust me on this. It burns more fuel for little gain. The ly6 is an perfect fit in the xstar it is more power than the mcx and without all the cost associated with the 8.1. You will be perfectly happy with the 6.0 as I will be in mine. Do not hessitate one minute on this motor it is awsome.
