Check the platform screws. If they are looking like they may be pulling out, when the tank is out is the time to replace them with thru bolts. I just got to wondering, does it have a platform?

that will be the reason for pulling the tank installing a new one

Thanks guys, saved me a question. I have a fiberglass platform and wanted to remove it for storage (boat won't fit in garage with it) and to use as a template to cut a pad for it. Was wondering if I had to pull the tank to do so....seems I do. Trying to bring a 82SS back to life.

I would think you only have SS lags holding platform on from factory. If you do pull tank, your gas line from filler tube to tank ( acouple of inches ) is probably shot.

put a cool billet or anodized fill cap and hole on while you're at it.
