Hi there, new to this site but I have been reading for a while.

I am looking at a 2002 197. Can any one tell me if this is the same boat as an X7? I assume it is an awesome slalom boat how is it for surfing/ wake boarding. Thanks Grant.

since it is an open bow (i think) at least you have the extra room needed when you get involved with board sports. the only bad thing is filling up fat sacs that are going to be in the way in the floor. but, if you don't mind that, the boat is ok. the hull isn't going to give you a great wake, even when the boat is loaded down. the surf wake is ok when it's weighted on the passenger-rear though. but the hull is a slalom specific hull....not conducive to a nice wakeboarding wake.

i have a 1999 x star that i love and works as a great all around boat. i'm thinking about selling if you're anywhere in the southeast and interested. if you haven't look at those yet, check them out. v drives are so nice especially when you start loading people in the boat and you need room.

Yes, the X7 and 197 are the same hull. The X7 has different graphics and a ballast bag in the back (and of course tower) Some say the X7 has a slightly larger slalom wake due to the weight of the tower.

The 2002-2008 is basically the same hull. It's the same hull that recently held all three new world records in men's slalom, men's tricks and men's jumping. The wake is virtually non-existent for slalom and jump, yet there's a beefy well defined large wake for trick skiing and wake boarding. Wake boarders probably prefer adding additional weight through ballast or fat sacs, but the trick wake is as good as it gets.

I also would like to have an 02 197. The hull does not have a "hook" like the other 197's making it a bit faster.
It also can legally hold 10 people unlike the 04 that is rated for 6.

Why is that? Eventually I figure we'll replace the '94 205 with a 197. Maybe in 5-10 years.....

Are you sure about that 03? I was under the impression the 02's didn't have the hook but 03' on up did??

Also now that I think about it the guy with the X7 had the hook added cause he was going to use it for footing...

So I'm pretty sure the 03s were like that.....

Not sure but I think there was a difference in rudders also not sure.....

I have just spent 3 hrs reading past forum questions what a ton of info.
In referring to the 197 hull someone mentioned "hook" what is that?
I have had an 85 stars and stripes for 12 years and will be selling to upgrade. Is there demand for those boats? It is blue and white, 351, power slot, interior: very good condition, exterior: very good condition, hole shot: insane.

i would avoid the 2001-2002 if you plan on skiing the course with it. for free skiing , no prob.

Proud owner of an 02 197 here. The "hook" appeared in 02 on Tournament Team edition boats only. It's a small "lip", extra fiberglass at the stern end of the bottom surface (the very trailing edge), which has the effect of bringing the nose down a bit and flattening out the wake. That means more wetted surface. There was also a rudder upgrade associated with that tweak, not sure if it came at the exact same time or not. In '03, all 197s had the "hooked" hull. Apparently the hook can be added if you find the right fiberglass shop and you could certainly get pointed in the right direction on here.

The advantage of the non-hooked hull is top end. My boat with the "Predator" 310hp will run over 47mph. So it's got a bit extra headroom for footing, which is nice - don't have to run flat out for one foots and such. When you're on a standard length barefoot boom, the sidespray is also plenty far back so it doesn't interfere with your activities out there.

As for the 85 - YES there's a market for it, and this is probably one of the best places to tap into it. Post some pix of your machine!

The capacity was changed when the inspectors realized the exhaust vents on the stern of the boat were below the rub rail. That is the lowest opening to the water and that was not noticed in the 2003 and 2004 certifications.

As for the hook. It defintely was added in 2003 across the board. The 2002 TT models had the hook, but I don't know about the anniversary models having it. The rudder on the 02 non hooked hull had a winged rudder that tried to do the same thing as the hook, push the bow down into the water by lifting the rear of the boat.

Check the transom of your '85. It is hooked.

I have an 05 X7. These are great boats! Go for it.

We surf behind mine, my son throws flips on his wake board on it, and it provides an excellent slalom pull.
