Well...just made a handshake deal on a 1973. I have seen the 68 at the factory. SOLD a 72 a couple of years ago and have owned a 76. All of the original era/hull design from Rob Shirley. Plan on restoring it to its origianal glory. What is pretty cool is it has the original Holmann Moody 302, or so it appears. The original trailer, original windshield. I will pick it up in a few days and post some before cleaning and after cleaning photos for all to see.

This could be "ONE OF THOSE STORIES"

So what are the plans for her after the restore? A showroom trailer queen? Not that there is anything wrong with that as long as it gets out on the water every now and then to stretch her legs.

Probably the plan right there. Some Classic MC history along side a current model

I hope to have it by the weekend or early next week. We shook hands today at 4pm w/ an agreed to price. I am waiting on the title for it

That old girl needs some help. Looks like she is nice and original though and mostly all there although a bit of a basket case. Those old speedos are cool. Apparently the previous owner used the engine as an anchor. Oh and I'll be the first one to vote to keep it original colors.

Definitely not a PCM. The earliest PCM/Waukesha's still had the center riser exhaust manifolds and the same style t'stat housing that was still in use 20 years later. Without a better picture of that housing, I wouldnt even wager a guess as to what it is, though the manifolds look to be the same ones used by Escort in the 70's. Ive never seen a RWP below the crank before. And doesnt that oil pan seem huge?

Anyways, the boat looks like a great starting point for a project. Being all original and having most of the parts is key.

While my preference is generally blue. That upholstery color and pattern looks like it would be sweet if updated accordingly, but not so much in blue or white as it looks in brown. So I'd vote for original gel scheme and vinyl.

I'd also vote for original color scheme...JMO.

I've got a question for ya. On my '76, the deck of the bow is slightly sloped upward from the windshield to the bow. The deck on the drivers side has what I'll call a "depression" just about where the back edge of the windshield is...does the '73 look like this, too?

Yours will be a good scheme to go with. Especially the sides. I don't know if we have the OLDER logo on file to do the graphics. It would help with set up for where everything goes or should be placed THANKS IN ADVANCE

Basic condition. I wanted to show you guys a photo of all the crap that was in the boat. Everyone always wants to see a before and after photos. The passenger seat skins are going to be good patterns to go from. The drivers seat. That's another story. It is a 2 piece one like in a older Nautique. The one in the 76 appears to be a single seat. I cleaned out all the through away crap today before I left work. Kept everything that I could that was related to the floor. There are 8 metal trim pieces that go around the edge of the floor. The motor is going to be taken down to the block. Heads are going out all the basic stuff. There will not be a platform added. It was not there in the beginning so I am leaving it off. This is not going to happen very fast. We are in the middle of season start up right now so service has to concentrate on customer needs. I'll keep you all informed. This was a REAL FIND. Besides "Cotton" at the factory and a few others we are going to try and get the history. I know that the boat came out of San Pablo California. There is a sticker on the dash w/ slalom times with the dealers name. It was purchased here in Tampa in 83/84. Probably came through Alan Kempton, the original MC dealer in the Tampa Area.

The color of the boat is hideous...UGLY to say the least. The 70's UGLY COLORS. Brown and BABY PUKE/Diareahha !!!!YUCK. The boat has not been left in the water. No blistering. The deck has some peeling. I wonder if the floor is UNDER WARRANTY HA HA HA. That's for another thread.

M FUNF Yes the deck has the PITCH back just like on yours

I added a platform to my 75 S & S even though I usually try to keep things (cars, boats, cycles) original. If the owner wants to ski the crap out of it like we do ours, a platform is a must.

Hey Jim,
I sent you a bunch of pictures. My driver seat is a fiberglass shell with snap on padded cover. It doesn't adjust at all.
The observer seat is on a fiberglass base. The seat bottom is a piece of plywood (looks like it used to be some kind of sign) with padded seat. The seat back is a separate piece that wraps around the corner. It also snaps in place.

I suppose the answer is cost, but why drop that option. My last two boats have been opposite of my tow vehicle's fill. I suppose you could open also open the other one to lessen the "fill up old faithful" that let's you know (1) the tank is full, and (2) you didn't previously have enough gas all over the back of the boat. ;)

Neat feature, especially in 73.

When Rob owned MC he got motors where ever he could. When I took a quick gander at the motor last week, those long exhaust manifolds I thought where Hollman Moody > Looked at it quick under a motor box on a tow cart...I have seen a 72 w/ a Holmann Moody 302. Anyway...The Escort Conversion was the company that PCM purchased. In PCMs early years the exhaust Manifolds looked just like the ESCORT ones.

Are you sure? PCM was formerly known as Waukesha. Ive seen Waukesha's in boats as early as '74, I believe. They have the same style manifolds and thermostat housings on the Fords that PCM used through the 90's.

http://correctcraftfan.com/diaries/images/577/photo4.jpg

Ive seen Escort conversions as late as '77. To my eye, the cooling systems dont look to be related.

Another vote to keep it 100% original, by the way. You only get one chance to do that.

edit: I forgot to mention that Holman Moody's looked completely different. Notice the lack of circ pump and the snail risers:

If you look at those EXHAUST manifolds those are the same ones that are on the 73. The motor is a 351 GT 255. My motor and manifolds are painted white vs. black like PCM. That motor appears to be a PCM conversion

Are you talking about M-Funf's engine? Its definitely an Escort. You can tell by the exhaust manifolds, t'stat housing, locations/brackets for RWP and alt, carb wedge plate, etc. Those are better indicators than the color of the motor, no? :D

Last time I looked at it close, it's actually a faded red, that looks orange. Gelcoat has some spider/stress cracks, but @ 40 years old, what would anyone expect. It's never had a major restoration. A quick clean-up/detail and it's ready for a photoshoot and nobody ever knows.

If you knew how long it took MasterCraft to get that boat back!
The guy that owned it was the original owner, and wouldn't sell or trade it to MC for anything or any amount of money. I had a conversation with John Dorton's dad, once when he was on tour with the #1 boat and he said MC had offered the guy any boat in MasterCraft's lineup in trade for it and he wouldn't take it. Then, he passed away and then his widow sold it to them for a undisclosed amount, cause she didn't want it.

I've heard the story of their quest to get the boat back. My offer of $1K stands. I'm wary of boats with wood in them that are stored outside under tarps (assuming arguendo that that's the permenant or semi-permenant form of storage). I would need the extra money to make it shine and add on to my garage.

But I would give it a wonderful home, read it a story every night, and drive it to church on Sundays. :)

My sincere apologies for the threadjack, Jim. It's just what I do sometimes.

It really torques my jaw that MC would pay a bunch of money to get that '68 back only to park it outside and cover it with a tarp

If they really want to preserve it (which it sounds like they don't to me), they should sell it to somebody who would take care of the darn thing...like TMCNo.1 That boat would shine like new forever...

What a waste of a great piece of history and machinery...

TNCno1 wouldn't know what to do with it, it ain't got no teak.:D

Plus he'd just take great care of it, continue being an unpaid ambassador of MC, and make it as purdy as it used to be.

I just think he was making fun of how some of the scammers from 3rd world countries spell in their emails to try and get peoples money. Have you tried to read some of the recent posts by some of our most english challanged high school and college students along with some of those practicing Textmessagebonics. I would hate to be a HR person and to try and read their resume when they are attempting to get a job or then a resignation if they were to quit their jobs.

Bring her back to show room Jim....I'd say as original as possible including colors.

Brown and tan was a 70's thing, and well so is it...I say keep her original too

I also say keep it as original as possible. Again not many can say that they have a 73 MC in their possession, and from then on color shouldn't matter.

What are the chances of finding old speedo's / gauges like the '73?

I'd love to restore my '71 but the whole dash is missing.

Also just want to bump this thread...
