Folks, still new to this but decided to replace the flax packing on the shaft. I am sure I have a reduction ratio of 1:5 so I went with the 5/16" the dealer gave me. When I pulled out the old packing it was 3 strips but it looked no bigger than 1/4. I tried to pack the new strips in but no luck there. Can someone tell me the correct size. I have a Ford 351 PCM with 1:5 reduction. 3/16th maybe?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Should be 3/16 on the reduction drives due to the larger shaft size.

Walkthrough of the process here (http://www.easttxskier.com/stuffingbox.html).

This site might be a help to you for the measurements. I'd also suggest using the product if you are replacing the packing.
