Woman Eating Chili Bites Into Human Finger

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A woman's meal at a Wendy's restaurant brought a whole new meaning to the term "finger food." The woman bit into a portion of a human finger while eating a bowl of chili Tuesday night at the San Jose restaurant, Santa Clara County health officials said Wednesday.

The woman, who asked officials not to identify her, immediately spit out the finger and warned other diners to stop eating, witnesses said.

"Initially she did put this object in her mouth and did bite down on it and wasn't sure exactly what it was," Santa Clara County Health Officer Dr. Martin Fenstersheib said at a news conference. "She's doing OK. Initially she was a bit grossed out it was described to me, and vomited a number of times."

Fenstersheib said the finger had been cooked at a high enough temperature to kill any viruses.

Officials said the fingertip was approximately 1 3-8-inches long and a half-inch piece of fingernail was also found. They believe it belongs to a woman because of the long, manicured nail.

Health investigators seized all of the ingredients at the restaurant and are tracing them back to their manufacturer. They believe the finger got into the chili at an earlier stage.

"We have no evidence of any accident within the employees at the facility itself," said Ben Gale of the Santa Clara County Health Department. "We asked everybody to show us they have 10 fingers and everything is OK there."

The restaurant has had only one minor health violation stemming from a leaky vent, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

"Food safety is of utmost importance to us," Wendy's spokesman Joe Desmond said in a statement. "We are cooperating fully with the local police and health departments with their investigation. It's important not to jump to conclusions. Here at Wendy's we plan to do right by our customers." Copyright © 2005, The Associated Press

I just want to know how someone could put anything 1 3/8" long, that came out of a bowl of chili, in their mouth without noticing it? Sounds fishy to me.

Did you see that they just arrested the woman who made the claim about the finger? I think the whole thing was a hoax. I'm wondering if she somehow got a finger and placed it in there. For some strange reason I'm actually interested in seeing how this all ends.

Woman who claimed she found finger in Wendy's chili arrested

JOSH DUBOW

SAN FRANCISCO - The woman who claimed she found a finger in her bowl of Wendy's chili last month was arrested in Las Vegas in the latest twist in a bizarre case.

Anna Ayala was taken into custody at her home Thursday night, San Jose police spokesman Enrique Garcia said. Garcia said police would not give any further details about the arrest until a news conference Friday afternoon.

Ayala's 18-year-old son, Guadalupe Reyes, said he and a friend had gone to the store around 9 p.m. when he got a phone call from another friend who was back at the house.

"We rushed back and she was already gone," Reyes said.

Reyes said he had no other details and was waiting to hear from his mother.

Ayala told police she found a finger in her chili on March 22 while eating in a Wendy's in San Jose. She claimed she was going to sue, but later relented days after police searched her home, claiming the publicity was too emotionally taxing.

When police and health officials failed to find any missing digits among the workers involved in the restaurant's supply chain, suspicion fell on Ayala, whose story has become a late-night punch line.

Ayala has a litigious history. She's filed claims against several corporations, including a former employer and General Motors, although it's unclear from court records whether she received any money. She even said she got $30,000 from El Pollo Loco after her 13-year-old daughter got sick at one of the chain's Las Vegas-area restaurants. El Pollo Loco officials say they didn't pay her a dime.

Earlier Thursday, Ohio-based Wendy's International Inc. announced it had ended its internal investigation, saying it could find no credible link between the finger and the restaurant chain.

All the employees at the San Jose store were found to have all their fingers, and no suppliers reported any hand or finger injuries, the company said.

Wendy's also announced that it would offering a free "Junior Frosty" this weekend to Bay Area customers in an attempt to draw people back to the chain.

Sales have dropped at franchises in Northern California, forcing layoffs and reduced hours, the company said. Wendy's also has hired private investigators, set up a hot line for tips and offered a $100,000 reward for anyone who provides information leading to the finger's original owner.

Associated Press staffers Christina Almeida and Joe Cavaretta in Las Vegas contributed to this report

I was wondering what happened to the end of my friend's finger after we tried to pull him out of the H2O at Lake Nacimiento! He lost it when it got caught between the ski (too small for his size) and the handle. Shucks, I thought a fish ate it for lunch.

Happened to my uncle at Camp Far West. He was using split handles with a slalom ski. Pinched a finger between the ski and the handle getting up and lost the tip from the bottom of the nail. It was a long and painful ride back to Sacramento. We used to joke about going back and fighting the Bass that got his finger. :D

Yes, that actually is a true story. I had to drive him down to Atascadero to the nearest hospital. He had some nice drugs and tipped a few brews back that night. His finger looks good now. He saw a specialist when he got back into Huntington Beach.

However, the woman who found the finger has now been "taken into custody". Apparently she has pulled similiar stunts like this in the past trying to get $$$'s out of big chains. The finger is real, but the authorities are looking at her friends fingers. Something doesn't smell right here.

Read a newspaper article on Evel Knievel last weekend. Seems he bet a finger on a golf round with another guy. Knievel lost and used a shovel to cut off the end of his pinky. He offered it to the guy, but he refused to take it. Evel then rushed to the hospital and had it reattached. Then offered to play the guy for an arm, but the other guy refused (don't blame him; even if you win, whatcha gonna do with a third arm?). Supposedly a true story.
