That's the Xstar. I think it's been out for a while. The one that's supposed to be "officially" released today is the 40th anniversary pro star.

The rear stripe pattern on that xstar reminds me of some of the hats in the pro shop.

why Csx??? IMO, just like slalom skiing, wakeboarding can take MC so far, soon the demographic will change and the focus will again shift....Wakeboarders will be getting older.....they will have kids....they are one of the millions of families that live around saltwater....they have the $$ and started fishing too.....I would consider myself in this group....however I can't justify spending the $$ on a CC boat from a new builder in the market.....Oh hell, honestly I cant afford one;)along with not being able to trim up....

Nice to see some useful design with the seat on the transom for getting your board on. I think the forward cant looks cool on all the newer boats, but it prevents ever being able to sit to get gear on.

I am a wakeboarder so I am not trying to make anyone mad when I say this... I feel they are trying to make it look to much like the wakeboard crowd. Skiing to me has always been a bit more classy than bling. From the looks of this I think they are going in the wrong direction. the 35th was a beautiful boat that stood out in a good way.

I hope they don't limit the # in 10 years, thats when we'll be in the market.

As far as between the 35th and the 40th I'm still undecided, the 35 is definitely clean and simple, but the 40th is sharp, classy, flashy, and you don't see a lot of red flake these days. Red flake with black wouldn't be my first choice but its nice.

Guys come on-(this coming from an owner and lover of the original stars boat) Every anniversary you guys want them to take a current hull put a Mastercraft down the side and some stars. I love the heritage but seriously if you want this brand to succeed you need to embrass new ideas and new things. Guess what the stuff in the proshop is the current trend and it is reflected here in the 40th boats too. It is not going anywhere and it shouldnt. The fact that MC makes only a handful on 190's anymore and the 214 coming out with what I would consider a wake boat style seating etc. should tell you something. Slalom/Combo/kneeboarding etc is not what it used to be in the least. I know all you purists dont like to hear that but there is a reason that you very rarely find dealers stocking direct drives west of the Mississsippi. Open your eyes and stop with the I want plain mastercraft shirts and that new stuff looks stupid. With what will happen in MC in the new few years what with the new marketing guy and all his abilities, the potential of the vdig, and the partnership with Penske and all the good that that will bring some very cool stuff is in store.

WoW!! I would agree that MC is making a killing selling wakeboarding boats with wild designs. I will also agree direct drives are hard to find; In fact, my dealer hasn't had a prostar on the showroom floor for years. BUT, what I do know is that Slalom is what made this company and they can not forget that. If retro styling is what we want, they should be able to provide that. There seems to be a difference in what the "purists" want, and what everyone else wants. It seems to me that they could put a small effort into offering a slalom boat every 5-10 years with the retro styling that is desired as a "add-on" package. That's all. It is not that hard to add stars to the side of a boat. simple is not always bad. Old school isn't either. Remember for years when the back of the boats said SKI instead of TOW!!!

Just my 2c

duckguy
09-24-2007, 11:21 PM
There does seem to be a difference in what purists want. I would say that the 197/214 are still a sedate style and heck the 08 graphics have some stars already on it. The Army and biker gangs buily Harley but they are not what will insure its survival.

09-24-2007, 11:31 PM
Duck, I think we're just going to disagree on this. I'd point to the fact that you just pulled what I am guessing is more than blue book on an older boat. Bottom line, that classic style is still sought after and people are willing to pay for it. It's not that I don't think someone will throw down the big money for the 40th boat, and how it will sell and resell over the years or whether it will bring more than its original retail like a couple of of the 25th S&Ss are known to have done. We'll just have to wait and see on that one. But since MC doesn't offer the S&S as standard option anymore, I know that I, for one, look forward to seeing them rolled out as an anniversary boat. If you look at the 25th, 30th, and 35th, while they played on the same theme, they are very distinct.

So while they 40th may not be my style of boat, I'm glad (and I'm sure MC is glad) that some folks like it.

09-24-2007, 11:38 PM
I might be considered some of the younger market that they are going for, I think it looks great on the XStar but not on the 197. Maybe do the same colors but I would do a different design for the 197/190. :twocents:

duckguy
09-24-2007, 11:44 PM
I agree I did. But I dont think that it was because people are just dying to have a boat with stars on it. I think it is because it was an original in great shape, not a retro copy. I dont think that there is anything collectable about a new boat with no production limits that the only difference is a gel scheme. I am just saying that the same stars on a new boat thing is getting a little unimaginative.

east tx skier
09-24-2007, 11:54 PM
It definitely was original and in great shape, but gel lines and looks shouldn't be discounted. Plus, it was that nice resale red.

And leading the charge on change is what an industry leader does. And it's not that I think this is a bad looking boat, although the plaid doesn't do it for me. But there's just something about the S&S boats, and I'll miss not getting to drool over one this go-round. With the anniversary boats, I think there's more to it than the decals. They had a sense of heritage that I'm just not getting from this boat. Again, I like the flake, but the lines are a bit of an abrupt departure from the traditional pro star lines (not just the S&S lines) that drew me to MC in the first place.

But it's not like it matters what I say about it. Just one guy's opinion. I'll just sit back, have a big handful of TMCNo1's popcorn and see how this new look goes for MC. I wish 'em the best.

Chas
09-25-2007, 12:44 AM
I want MC to be wise enough to know and care about what today's buyers want. Put out the boat that is in demand right now. That way, they will sell enough boats to be around to support my older boat...

the one with the stars on the side.

03 35th Anniversary
09-25-2007, 04:17 AM
The color scheme on this boat looks alot better on the X-Star. It looks like to me that is where they concentated on making it look the best. Then they took the same color scheme and slaped it on the 190/197 and called it a day. Thats why its not appealing to most of us in my opinion. I can see why they wouldn't want to have 2 different color schemes. Since the X-Boats out sell the prostars its easy to see why they took that route. If you think about it, what would a 03 X-Star look like with the 35th color scheme on it? Probably not to hot by the picture I got in my head. I still want to see the boat in person before really making a decision on if I like it or not. Pictures probably don't help it any.

Just a little food for thought and my:twocents:

Doug, eat all the popcorn you want, there is plenty more where that came from. It's not microwave either, it's traditional popcorn unlike the new.........................................., Oh, nevermind!:D

This boat is IT!!! Does anyone know about it? 2008 ????

It's got to be an '08 with that color of vinyl. Unless the lighting is throwing it off.

It's not just the color/ design of the 40th prostars that's disappointing to me. It's also the fact that they are not limited in numbers and also do not have anything uniqe about them. If I'm correct,. the 35th's had the LQ9 for the first time in a prostar.

I don't disagree with duckguy's comments about the direction of the sport and MC. But the anniversary boats should be for the purists and limited in number. JMO

edit: I'd just add: Give us only 40, give us stars, and let us overpay! :D I would have. ;)

I could not agree more! If you want a plain MC (I did), order it that way! To p*ss and moan about the 40th is not right and I have to disagree with most "purists". If you want a metalflake boat with stars down the side, order a metalflake boat and toss some stars on there... I am sure domed numbered could even make some sweet domed ones to match the MC!

On the other hand though, the anniversary gel/color/vinyl schemes have been timeless classics. I would just be worried buying this boat, that in 5-10 years, the boat is going to look outdated. That is my .02... for what it is worth!!

east tx skier
09-25-2007, 10:03 AM
It's also the fact that they are not limited in numbers and also do not have anything uniqe about them.

For what it's worth, the 1993 Stars and Stripes weren't limited in their numbers. It was approximately a $750 option that year offered through July 1993 or so. The 190 Ltd was the limited edition (unlike the Ford LTD) with the LT1 (almost all of them). Only 25 made. So I guess there's an anniversary boat that's not a S&S. But the gel lines were classic nonetheless.

Can MC or one of the dealer chime in here? Is this going to be a limited production boat or is it just an optional scheme that can be ordered by however many want it?

I got the same story from my dealer yesterday - that the only limit will be a production cutoff date. I was surprised but apparently that is the news. He doubted they would be getting a 40th 197 due to low interest in direct drives...... except the 214/X-14.

If you take a picture of the decal, any respectable sign shop can convert it and make an IDENTICAL decal. With you being all legal and lawyerish, you might want to talk to MC, to ensure that you will not be at risk of being charged with copyright infringement.....

I'm not having any sign shops make anything. I just have a couple of OEM decals from the classic S&Ss that I'm selling. But you're correct, if it's a proprietary font, there could be trouble reproducing it and a lot of sign shops would probably not find that worth the risk.

Maybe the '03 S&S was too good to follow up to. I think the '07 TT boat would have been a better follow up as the stars&stripes legacy model style. Maybe the '08TT will be the real S&S. I can dream right?

Beyond legal aspects, it looks odd to me when someone puts a classic look on the wrong boat (or car). Like the 209 where an owner ordered the '03 stars and put them on. While it's far from the worste idea, it won't hold as much weight with me as the additional unique double trim black lines etc that are on a legit '03 S&S. But, you don't put '68 Camaro racing stripes on a Suburban, right? Point is, even if someone loves the look, it won't be as cool (to me) as when the manufacturer creates the unique anniversary model. Same goes for those who put Tournament Team decals on a boat that doesn't have the TT paint scheme. [ehem, anyone remember said 197?]

Even though I'd imagined a S&S of some sort, there is a cool factor with the 40th anniv boat. I do think it may look dated in a few years, and thank the lucky stars that carpet overlay isn't permanent. Hey at least the PS font is a little throughback to the 93 era, all it needs is three shadowed stars.

Exceptions to my home-grown distain: The '86 General Lee was a different story, with some stars and a little orange paint, a cool unique boat was born. In similar fashion, if Eastie's design was done right, it could have the same level of coolness. Cuz '68 Camaro stripes might look pretty good on a '08 even if it didn't come from the factory.

Disclaimer: Who am I to talk, when I'm the guy with '01 decals on a '93? But, I sure think it looks better than if I jimmy-rigged a S&S look on my boat by adding stars. Who cares 80% of you skipped reading my post since it's so long anyhow.

I'm noticing a trend....

When the 280 came out, there were cries of "has Mastercraft lost their way", now it seems like a regular member of the family. Definely the big brother ;)

When the new graphics came out on the X boats they looked childish, cheap, etc, now they are widely copied and generally accepted. This is both the big X in the middle and the paint splash.

When the pickle fork came out, it was ugly, non-functional, trying to think of clean words....but given some time and look at Skeelers boat and what comes to mind......well besides his lovely wife! Those boats are beautiful and so functional.

Then the CSX comes out, wow what a beating that one took and slowly I am hearing people starting to say how much they like it and how functional it is....

OK, I get it now after seeing the anniversary X-Star pics and I know a few others have mentioned this.

I tried to tell myself that they didn't just put X's on the Prostar from the same pattern as the "X" knowing in the back of my mind that is exactly what they did.

I will say that the X Star looks absolutely beautiful but whoever decided to put the X graphics on the anniversary Prostar either does not understand the true essence of the Prostar or just doesn't care.

I made a mistake saying that the 40th anniversary Prostar is timeless.

I realized this after reviewing the pics many times and feel that they did a great job until the X graphics.
What should have been done is the metalflake should extend all the way to the back of the boat and not have the black transition as the X boats do.

The chrome stars, MC on the trailer, etc. are great but the black transition and X's blew it.
Also, the carpet selection of dark gray was another mistake.

Matter of fact, IMO, to maintain the true essence of what made MC great is that the anniversary Prostar should always be a 190 or at least both the 197 and the 190 as was done in the 35th.

I know, I know, nobody want's a closed bow and everyone really uses that tiny space up there but just try to imagine that boat as I have described with a closed bow and that beautiful gelcoat on the bow glistening in the sun.

My opinion may not mean anything to MC and I have really tried to be positive about this but I say again, I made a mistake in my earlier comment and feel that MC has made a mistake with allowing this to happen.

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO CHANGE IT!

Sincerely,
stevo

Is the checkerboard pattern a decal or laid in the gel?

Could we get a close up of the 40th emblem?

The plaid area is a decal, the gel coat lines are the similar to the current X-Series slider patterns but with the Ruby Red metal flake on instead of the standard gel options.

I'll try to find a pic of the emblem, it is pretty cool. I do not know if it will be available as a stand alone item though it would look pretty good on my truck if it was.

Doug,

I know you know the rules better than anyone here. But is expressing an opinion about not liking a certain boat against the rules?

I realize that if I say "the MC 280 is a piece of junk" then it is bashing. But if I say "I hate that boat in yellow" or "I don't like metalflake" is it really violating the rules?

If so the agreement to using this site should be reworded and we can be crystal clear not to post any negative thought whatsoever.

When I was a mod, I had the unfortunate position of having to moderate a thread that coincided with the release of the CSX. Lots of comments ranging from abonination to ugly were ultimately met with a response from Admin saying that MC didn't think that was so great. Again, I sincerely doubt that the moderators care if someone feels one way or the other about the 40th Anniversary boat. This is MC's site and they are MC's rules. So is calling the 40th boat ugly bashing? Yes, probably ... in MC's view. The moderators probably still get a lot of instruction from Admin as to how to proceed and, if they haven't yet, they probably seek advice from them.

Another thing probably worth mentioning... I know when Beau and I were doing that job, there wasn't much that we did without talking it over. So it's my farily well informed opinion that singling out one moderator as the bad guy is really not much more than shooting the messenger. I'm fairly confident based on a year of doing this job that Moderator3 has talked with one if not several other moderators about anything he may do before he does it. I also wouldn't be surprised if Moderator 3 in August was Moderator4 in September and will be Moderator1 or Moderator2 in October. That's just a hunch.

I feel a great deal of sympathy for these people who take this abuse and are accused of being on a power trip. Anyone who had done the job would be shaking their head at this notion like I do when I read it. When I retired from that job, we asked people to step up for replacements. We had lots that offered their services and, ultimately, six got the "honor." I'll bet they'd love to have more moderators if anyone would like to PM TTAdmin to offer their services. If anything, I'd bet you'd see things differently from being on the other side of the equation. As I said before, I think it's good to have a rotation in moderation so people take more stock in this forum. I realize that's not very realistic on my part.

What I don't know about this situation may probalby fill the ballast tanks on an X80, but I just like this place better when we're not at each others' throats. I'm probably just having moderator flashbacks.

Doug,
