View Full Version : Steering play

Anyone have 2 to 3 inches of play in their steering at speed in a 2005 197 pro star? Had 4 inches of play and the dealer put in a new cable now it is only about 2 inches.
Hard to go thru a slalom course!!!!
Seems excessive. I may have 1/8" if that on my 86'. I guess 2" would make it real tough to get it through a course. Something is up, not sure what?

seems excessive to me also since I have owned 4 mastercrafts with no play in the steering. The dealer said the factory said this is acceptable.

What dealer??? There should be some play. Did you purchase the boat NEW from the dealer? Sounds like you need a new rudder, not just a cable. Shaving or sanding down and edge will help with tension.

I have a 2002 197 TT and replaced my cable last spring because of similar amount of play and stiff steering.
What I discovered was under the black plastic cover (looks like an accordion) on the steering shaft by the wheel the parts that allow the tilt of the wheel had come loose.
I pulled the steering wheel off and that cover, tighten all the allen head bolts up, as they were following out!! and the steering was back to normal!!
I hope this helps, PM if you need more info!:D
