I'm not all that old but I remember $.79

Crazy thing is the first year I moved to Louisiana (2000) we had a month or so where gas prices were $.89. They stayed right at $1.00 for about 6 months. What the h3ll? I blame the Chinese and the fact that the oil market is rigged.

I'm not that old either... (i hope) But I remember buying gas for the boat in 5 gallon cans when I was in High school and paying .89/gallon. We were upset when it rose to a buck! I had to mow more lawns between ski rides at that point.

I remember when it was less than a dollar at the marina and I could fill up the MC for 20 bucks.

To fill Dads boat in 1955 was $.23 / gal.
To fill my boat in 1982 was $1.30 / gal.
Today at WallMart $2.69 / gal.

But a quote from a fellow TT member is a real healthy way to look at it all!!!!

PESSIMESTIC? I was at the gas station fueling my MC and someone at the next pump said "Thats got to hurt" And my reply was. "no way!, The more fuel that goes into the boat, the more fun comes out of it!" I hate to see boats docked on sunny days.

I would buy 25 gallons, in the old school metal 5 gallon cans and it was about $30. That was in 1987 when my parents bought their Starline Sierra 150. That's when I started paying for gas at least. I ran the hell out of that boat every weekend for years, and blew up four engines in the process! I wish it had an hour meter! It sure does chafe a bit more these days. Oh well, I'll go without food so I can have more money for gas for the boat!

Wasn't born in '82, but it looks like gas prices must not have moved much in almost 20 years. I remember paying $0.89-$0.99 a gallon (not on the water) in 1999 & 2000 in St. Louis.

I remember Labor day of my Junior year of High School (1999), the gas was $0.99 a gallon. At the time, I was allowed to use my parents lakehouse and boat, but I had to pay my own gas. We had a Labor Day party up there and I think I had everyone throw in $40 bucks for beer, food and gas! Today, I am luckiy if I can get 1/3 a tank of gas for $40 bucks!!

I think gas was around $1.09 when I started driving. I had a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee V-8 that loved gas. I can remember putting $5.00 in and getting it up to 1/4 tank:D.

"Back in the day"....they'd have gas wars at an intersection with a gas station on each corner in Green Bay. I paid 22.9 in '71 or '72!

historically speaking gas isn't really THAT expensive. think about the 1920's think they paid 50 cents then in modern $?

and comparing what we pay here to what is paid in many foreign countries? 5.29 USD/Gallon in Frankfurt, more in the UK...

So really we have it decently alright here... Not that I enjoy it, but if we want fuel prices to decrease we actually have to work to make it happen... which no one does.

People overseas where gas is so expensive simply turn off their cars at lights; slow down a bit, and do everything they can to conserve it...something we don't do here at all - we'd rather wait in the McDonald's drive through burning all our gas getting supersized, when we could easily park and walk-in.

I live in the England, I bought my first ski boat in 1988 petrol was approx 50p pence per litre (5 dollars per US gallon) it now cost £1.08 per litre (10 dollars per US gallon).
I now have 1979 stars an strips MC, I will convert it to LPG because it's cheap approx 4 dollars per gallon

I remember it being around .80 per gallon at the lake. That was around 1972...

For many years, we had a company gas card through my dad's company (perk). He got it when gas was less than a buck a gallon, and had it until it was around 2 bux. We each had a card. My Ford F-250 got about 6 mpg. The '79 ford LTD got around 8 mpg. I think we had it pretty good...

Anybody here remember odd/even days at the gas stations during the gas "crisis"?

18 cents, up in Michigan, in the 60's. I don't know what it was, but the car did go.

In 1963, I was working pumping gas while in High School at a convenience store @ 17.9 cents /gal and that's when high test was 21.9 cents/gal. Then it started a gradual rise into the high 30's and low 40 cent bracket in the late 60's. As previously posted, in 1970 I started having to pay 40.9 cents/gal for Sunoco 260 (103 octane then) for a '69 Z28 or Amoco Premium (white gas/unleaded, 98 octane) for 39.9 cents/gal, the same stuff you had to use for Coleman campstoves and lanterns.

Don't know if this is the future or not, but you may want to start biggie-sizing all those fast food orders today! Maybe your heavier boat buddies will have a choice when donating to the fuel fund. :D
