Am headed from Boston to NC this w/e 1300 miles in 2 days. Was thinking of using that blue painters tape for some of the front of the car to protect from stones etc. May look a little stupid but I don't care re: looks. Seem like a good idea, stupid? Should come off OK?? Thanks for any input.

Blue tape comes off paint fine so long as it doesn't sit way too long on the paint in the sun.

But really, is it needed?

You're gonna pick up chips from stones even through painters tape

might as well just not follow someone too close, and you'll be fine.

What part of NC are you coming to?

Painters tape would not be a good idea IMHO. When It gets wet it is a biach to get off. Surely an auto parts store bras cheap enough:confused:

Just buy the clear bra off of ebay for a $100 bucks. I just bought a roll for my car for the same reason. It is 8 mils thick, so it should protect quite well. I do not think blue tape would protect that well... I could be wrong though,

How about borrowing a pair of Mrs. UMP's panties and taping them over the hood and to the underside of the hood? Plenty big enough ;)

Smell might be troublesome though

I used the blue painters tape to wrap my MC tower when I went on a road trip and it pretty much came off when we went through a rain storm. Not a useful option.

Actually...there was something in a recent issue of C&D where you can purchase a can of spray that lasts for a few days. You can get it in clear or black, and it was pretty cheap - like $8 a can or something. You can spray it on the front and mirrors...it's like teflon and it just washes away. So if you run into rain, you may have to reapply. The editors seemed to like it - they actually used the black stuff and painted letters on other staff's cars - funny stuff. they thought it was paint, but washed right off ;)

Drive in reverse if you're that worried about the front. :D You may need to leave earlier though.

Just having fun. Have a safe trip.

That did seem like a good idea, but I checked and it stated it protects against bugs and road grime. Not many bugs this time of year, and the car is sure to be trashed (i.e grimey) after this trip. Wanted to get some protections from rock chips, debris. Thanks!

You guys are right, should just drive it and not worry about it.
They'll be lots of semi's and lots of crap flying on 95 so was looking for an easy way to save a little wear and tear on the front of the car, but regardless we're rocking and rolling tomorrow w/ no tape:D Thanks again

What kind of car do you have? I think I would rank you highest in customer loyalty if you like your car so much you'd cover it in blue painters tape just to prevent a scratch or chip.

Was just thinking a few strips on the front, nothing too crazy. Car is blue, so it would not have been too bad. It's a 2008 BMW 760Li, I mean a 2007 Dodge Caliber R/T :D Wish I could blame the start of this thread on drinking or sumpin :o

Nothing wrong with starting the thread, it's your vehicle, your investment and yours to do/protect as you want.
I have always made it a practice to stay way back from semi's, box trucks, dump trucks and busses to minimize the sandblasting from vehicle ahead of you. Bugs shouldn't be much of a problem this time of year unless it turns off real warm. A good application of RainX to the windshield and headlights, then a heavy application of Pledge Furniture Polish (do not polish, just apply the paste) to the mirrors, grill, bumper forward facing surfaces will help prevent bugs from sticking to the paint. If you get in rain, it will wash off and you will have to really after the rain stops, but, it's better than nothing.

back when I was doing the whole car scene thing, people with high end paint jobs that still wanted to cruise their cars to the show did the exact same thing. Should work great!
