Have to replace my exhaust and going to replace the risers also on my 01 X-star, 350 vortex, 310hp.
I borrowed my brothers digital temp gun and took readings earlier this past summer but misplaced my findings!
I am going to powder coat them to add a splash of color back there and the colors available for high temp powder coats are few in the colors I can order in the high temp range!
Does anyone know the MAX temp range they run at?
Thanks...

I am getting the high heat stuff but 2 diferrent temp ranges have different colors, and the color I would like is on the lower of the heat range specdrum!!!!dork!!!That's why I need to see if it will handle it:D

Thats a nice way to put not combing, washing or cutting your hair.
All I know is this: USCG says exhaust has to be down to 120 deg F by the time it leaves the boat and it's a little hotter up at the heads.
Does that help?
I'll suggest 500 deg high heat paint is good for everywhere but the hot spots at the heads. Guessing 125-180 on the risers and top portion of the manifolds. If you want it to last, I hope you can get higher than 500 since I've seen it easily come off the first elbows of manifolds. I haven't seen a boat that hasn't had the mfr's paint come off the elbows after two years of use.

I can tell you that Jet-Hot which is a pretty big name in header coatings offers a Marine coating that is good up to 1300 degrees. I would go with the higher temp. if you can get a color you like because it seems much less likely to flake off. You may have a color you like more but what does it matter if it starts flaking off after a month?

Are we talking about regular cast iron manifolds? I would think that either powder or cerramic (like Jet Hot) coating would be pretty expensive ($200-300). I doubt even high temp powder would last at the base of the headers- cerramic would be a much better choice. Unless we're talking about nice aluminum or SS manifolds, Id just hit them with some high-temp rattle can stuff and be done with it.

If they had a color other then black in ceramic(very limited colors) but ceramic only goes up to 1300', Most hi-temp powders go to 1000', I do the powder coating myself, They do have a chemlon blue that I could go with or a silver in the 1000' range but as was stated why waste the time and money to have it flake or burn off! That's why I need the truest temp they run cause that will dictate which way I need to go!
If I could "afford" alloy or SS manis I would shine the blazes out of them!!!
If the cast Indmar ones were good enough to strip and polish I would go that route for sure(like shinny things!)
Just want to go different then stock black! I get my powders out of EASTWOODS and that's the highest temp range they offer in my "wish" colors.

Why not go with one of the high temp coatings that look like polished aluminum? I've seen them in person in high performance cars with hotter headers/manifolds and it looks awesome.

Good info. If the risers are completely jacketed in water, the risers should not deviate much from the blended temperature of the mixture of exhaust/water spilling from the tips. The primary vapor cooling mechanism is the mixing of the hot vapors with the cooler water. The distance traveled has very little direct effect, only indirectly through mixing time.
I know when my boat is running, I can barely, comfortably touch the risers. That means mine are ballpark 50-60°C.

Just for the giggles of it, call Unique Coatings, High Point, NC, David Brown @ 1-336-841-1800 or 1-336-841-1811 and ask him what is available in high heat/ceramic coatings and colors. He has 2 facitities that coat everything imaginable, from furniture parts, manufactured pieces for John Deere tractors, outdoor steel. street rod parts, motorcycle parts and race car parts including headers inside and out that withstand the rigors of oval track to drag racing applications. IIRC, some of his customers are Bill Davis Racing, Petty Enterprises, and Richard Childress Racing. If it holds up for their use, it should hold up in a boat.
Here is a link to his website, http://www.uniquecoatings.com/index.html
Under the Racing Applications page, you will see a Nascar Southern Whelen Modified Tour car #99 that I painted the flames, lettered and pinstriped. The entire car including the body panels, except for the fiberglass hood is powdercoated.

Harold, Can they just make a plug that goes into your head so if needed someone can just tap into your brain and get the info you've acquired over the years they need!!! :D
I'll look Unique up to see what they have to offer in colors, I know some one else has got to have another hi-heat color range and assortment of colors.(seems like it)

Unique has a high heat exhaust header coating that is called "Semi Chrome" that is about 85% of real chrome and is used on street rods and race cars and we never had peel or burn after a full season of racing.
