I forgot to mention that I got boarded by the game warden during my outing this weekend. Well, not really boarded, but I like the sound of that better. I think he keeps tabs on who he's checked, so I think I've had my one interaction for the season.
I felt pretty good about checking my fire extinguisher a few days before. It always looks good when you can run down the list of what they want to see without them asking for it. He saw the fire extinguisher was in the green and that we had two life jackets and was about to shove off when I mentioned, by the way, she's sitting on the throwable cushion.
I should mention that when I bought my first boat, I got boarded on my second outing and had enough life jackets, but nothing else. :o Got off with a warning though. I'd hate to make them regret that leniency.

I know I have a fire extinguisher..........but couldn't for the life of me remember where it is in the boat. Mental note.............mount extinguisher in an accessible location

I got "boarded" once a few years ago. It was first time out for the year. Had everything I needed, well except for the current regestration.
It was back in the glove compartment of the truck. He was cool with that and let me go on my way. :steering:

Didn't you have a current registration decal on your boat by the reg numbers?

I was ticketed for no throwable once.. CRummy way to spend $150....
The funny part is I was going just a little too fast in a 5mph zone ( maybe 7mph) and these two jet skis got in my way. I tried to ram em, and then I saw UNDER the rubrail it said Sheriff ( stealth cops).. The two punk jerks told me I was putting out a wake.. Should have seen the looks on there faces when I said " This is a mastercraft, NO WAKE"... Still got a ticket....
One of the punk jerk cops was bragging away to my other friend how they were gonna get new jet ski's because of all the money they were making giving tickets...

When you pass your inspection, around here, they give you a sticker to put on your boat. It may be ugly on the side window, but it is worth its weight in gold......no more inspections for the year.

That's what happened the last time they boarded me. This time they didn't ask for it. I'm pretty sure it's in the glove box on the boat though. I hope so.

We used to ski in a couple of areas got patrolled quite a bit. We would go stretches where it seemed like we got "boarded" at least once a week. We learned it is not worth trying to avoid them. They tended to watch the ones that kept going the other way a lot more carefully. We just act friendly and have everything out and ready before the even get along side. The guys by us often had handouts for the kids. Everything from coloring books to baseball style "cop cards". I was usually happy to see them out as it ment that most of jet skis and and drunks went into hiding leaving us with open flat water.

I had someone tell me that I had to have an automatic setup in my engine compartment. I had never heard this before. Is this a requirement on larger boats? Maybe boats manufactured after a certain date or just B.S.?

They have that in my area too. I just tell them to give them to someone who needs it. They seem too remember that as much as seeing the sticker on your side window.

I just saw an 04 Ski Nautique for sale in Texas that was advertised to have an automatic fire extinguisher. First I'd ever seen of one. It wouldn't surprise me if it were an option on MCs as well though.

one thing I reprimanded my loacal dealer about is not going over the basic boating laws with a new inexperienced owner.
he didn't tell me I had to have a fire extenguisher, paddle, throwable, etc.....
several weeks later, I let it be known very loudly in front of other customers that he didn't inform me of required items. I wasn't freaking out or anything, just speaking "firmly":D

Haven't had a boarding yet. See them around often. Seems to be many rules in Indiana. Everytime I read I learn something new. Last year I learned there is an age requirement to drive a boat. We also have to have a whistle and oar.

I knew about the oar but not the whistle. What if I can whistle? Do they have a required decibel rating? That may be a good idea but I would have a hard time getting a ticket for that one! That may be the one that puts me over the edge! :purplaugh Haven't had a boarding yet. See them around often. Seems to be many rules in Indiana. Everytime I read I learn something new. Great ones! Must be raining outside, lot of people on the board.
I like this one.
"Generally, a child onboard must wear a life preserver."
And does this mean no one upfront in a even a PS 209? Or is this for closed fronts?
"Riding Gunwales or Bow Decking: A person operating a motorboat must not allow a person to be on the gunwales. A person operating a motorboat less than 21 feet long must not allow a person to be on the bow decking except for anchoring, mooring, casting off, or when otherwise necessary."

One thing I always wonder about on my boat is the horn. I can't believe it is legal. It is mounted up underneth the bow and when underway, can hardly be even heard by somebody in the back seat.
How about others with closed bow 190's. Can your horn be heard?

There you go Bob, Efficient Sound Signal. Looks like the rules actually allow the horn to be used. And to think I wasted my money on that certified whistle that is full of dirt in the bottom of the glovebox! I remember being told I must have a whistle!
"Sound Producing Devices
IC 14-15-2-10 through 15
During periods of reduced visibility or whenever a boat operator needs to signal his or her intentions or position, a sound-producing device is essential. The device may be a whistle, horn or bell that is audible for one-half mile.
The following requirements apply to boats operating on Waters of Concurrent Jurisdiction (http://boat-ed.com/in/handbook/boater_education.htm):
Boats less than 12 meters (39.4 ft.) in length, which includes PWC, are required to carry a whistle or horn or some other means to make an efficient sound signal to signal intentions or positions. "

You had me at hello! I know a genuine certified whistle can cost ya! How about a freakin cell phone, whistle, mirror, walkie talkie, flare gun, magnafying glass, inflatable raft, generator, 7 day supply of C-Rations, gum, change of clothes, gas, water, spare ammo, fiberglass repair kit, spare steering wheel, Fleetwood Mac cd, sparkplugs, plug wires, sun screen, OFF, fireextinguisher, GPS, first aid kit, life vests, roach motel, and a what Mag said that rhymes with oar. I'm selling my boat!!!!!!There you go Bob, Efficient Sound Signal. Looks like the rules actually allow the horn to be used. In Texas, we have to carry our small registration card in the boat. Lake patrol kill the jet skiers with this one! My cousin got a ticket for this one time on his jet ski. I still thought it was funny!

Yeah, not sure who decided to put the horn on my 2002 197 under the driver dash. It scares the heck out of me whenever I use it! No-one else hears it though. The newer models have the low profile units mounted on the outside hull (similair to what you see on cobalt, sea ray etc...).

I'm almost positive this is laminated, yet smudged, and in a damp plastic bag in my glove compartment. Fortunately, he didn't ask for it so I didn't have to go digging. I think he was impressed that I was pulling stuff out before he asked for it. I doubt its as common on this particular lake where we were this weekend.
As for horns, I really need to get the horn Rodney had on "Seafood" in Caddyshack.

Correct Craft has had Halon Fire Extinguishing systems as optional equipment since at least 1992 (as far back as my brochures go). Not listed anywhere in my 2003 Mastercraft brochures.

I can't wait for ABS, SRS and Prop Control to hit the boating industry. Just one more light I don't need reminding me something is not functioning! On a more serious side has anyone installed a valve on the water pickup just in case of the obvious? Are these now standard or even an option?

The horn is fairly loud, but not as loud as my finger when someone p!sses me off :)
I know where my fire extinguisher is, but guess I should make sure it's still charged.
My one skiing buddy had his old extinguisher discharge on it's own last year while they were out skiing. The pin was still in it. What a mess that was to clean up!

We got inspected while on our skis and didn't have fire-exts onboard and the ranger said, "What would you do if your ski caught fire?" to which I replied, "I'd jump off and swim away..."

I'm pretty sure that "bow decking" and "bow seating" are different. You ever tried to ride on the front of a closed bow? Pretty scary. A friend of mine got pulled one time because someone was riding on the rear sunpad of this Bayliner (he finally saw the light and bought a MC).
