Go for it Mag!! They are REALLY nice trucks. They look great and the new 5.4 really turns! I had a 2000 Model (which was not the newest body) It was a great truck!! That is....... until the supercharger I added fried the transmission!!! But Ford was cool, they even warrantied it!

I have a 97 with the 5.4 and it does good and has 99K on it with no engine or transmission problems.
I have friends with the 04's and 05's and hear nothing but good reviews about them.

Mag, are you looking at SuperCab or SuperCrew? (Go for SuperCrew, unless you really need the bed length.)

Mag, are you looking at SuperCab or SuperCrew? (Go for SuperCrew, unless you really need the bed length.) I'm leaning towards the Super Cab. I thought I wanted the crew, but after sitting in the back of the x-cab, it has slightly more leg room than the current Silverado. Not sure I want to pay the extra $2000 for 4 full sized doors and a shorter bed. I'll run up there and take some pics of this bad boy. I just hope I can get out of the showroom with out signing something :D

My opinion:

Get the 4 big doors. I think I'd vote for that over 1 foot of extra bed length, if those were the 2 choices.

I recently switched from ext cab to crewcab. Huge difference. Especially if you are trying to put 4 people in to go the lake or Cumberland in your past examples. I don't care how many footballplayers they put in an extended cab on a radio commercial, it is still small with a very vertical rear seat back.

Other opinion, Black is awesome when it is just washed. 5 minutes later when it is dirty again, it shows faster than any other color. Looks very good though.

Reasons not to get it: It is black -- which is the toughest color to keep clean. (Seems counterintuitive, but white is the easiest to keep clean and black the most difficult.)

I've got a 2004 F-150 4x4 with 5.4L; not sure of the rear gear.

I've got the rear suicide doors; I drop my 7 year old off at school each morning and these are a bit of a pain. Since she rides in the back seat, she either climbs over the console to get into the front seat and exits out the passenger door, or I get out out so the back door on the driver's side can be opened. If your crew hauling will be rare, or if when people get out everyone gets out, no problem. This is the one thing I'd change if I could...though I bought mine used from my father-in-law, and his selection wasn't too broad.

I've had good luck with mine so far. Pulls the PS 190 well. Quiet on the highway.

Bongo Silver or Pewter is the easiest color to keep clean. I had a pearl white Toyota a while ago and that car always looked dirty to me.......even when I cleaned it. I would always find some slightly discolored spot on it.......drove me nuts! Had a Black TransAm, also a biotch to keep clean, but when it was, it was spectacular! :headbang:
My Silverado will still be my daily driver. :wavey: As far as the crew....Only when I take my daughter and her friend to the lake....and she will be driving soon. :eek3:

Yes it ranks up there, but the Pontiac Aztek wins hands down as the ugilist.

As far as the suicide rear doors on the supercab, there is one problem with them. When getting 3 or more people out the same side in a tight parking lot, you get trapped between the 2 open doors.

Might as well throw my :twocents: in here. I definitely like the new F-150's better than the previous version. I would have a very hard time buying a black truck (unless I had a black boat) because they are so hard to keep clean, they're extremely hot in the summer, and they show every little scratch and waxing swirl. With all that said, black would definitely look the best with your boat, and a thin yellow pinstripe might make it look even better. I would prefer a chrome grill and bumpers just to dress it up some; it has chrome step bars, but not much chrome anywhere else. The worst thing would be buying a yellow pickup and the two yellows not matching.

I'm on my second Dodge Quad Cab, and I like having the suicide doors because I can access stuff behind the driver's seat without having to go around the passenger door to get to it. However, if I were buying a new truck I would have a hard time not getting the 4-door version just for the convenience of carrying passengers, and for their comfort. I could be wrong but I think Dodge's 4-door pickup has a full 6 1/2 ft bed; why doesn't Ford offer this option as well?

I don't think you'll be disappointed either way you go. It's an awesome looking truck.

You can get a crew cab in a ford with a real bed, but I don't think you can get it in a half ton model like gm and apparantly dodge offer.

Wait till GM gets in the mid 20's and BUY! You will reap the rewards. How many of us wish they would have bought Chryler stock when they were tanking? Begin Thread hi-jack:

Not that I can talk or anything. I bought this lovely stock in December.

Found out Monday I was a victim of a "pump and dump."
I had read the reports stating this stock was to be a good one. Unfortunately it was all fluff. Apparrently 2 guys bought a crapload of the stock for about what it is now ($.30) and created false reports and such. I am down over 90%. OUCH! The 2 guys made millions and probably have it in off-shore accounts waiting for them when they get out of prison.
Oh well, you win some you lose some.

I drive about 20,000 miles a year.

I pay ~$2.00 per gallon in UT for Unleaded.

I save ABOUT $800.00 per year owning a Chevy instead of that Ford you're looking at.

I can also climb Parleys Canyon at 75 mph on OD. Somehting no other gas truck I kow of can do.

There are the reasons I can think of. The new F-150 is a SWEET looking truck though. I dig the style and interior. If only it didn't weigh 5600 lbs!

When I was shopping the Tahoes and Expeditions last year, the Tahoe was rated at a bit higher fuel economy than the Expedition. My average (for combined city and highway) is about 15-16 mpg the last time I checked.

Nice truck but by the grill I can tell it's the base model - it doesn't have the fancy honeycomb grill that the top-of-the-line models do. It probably doesn't end there, but if you like it, who cares what trim level it is?!?

I'm glad you asked. My truck ('96 x cab, sb, 4x4, 350, 5 speed) get's OVER 14.5 mpg towing my boat to lake powell and back, 75+ mph all the way. No gas Ford can touch that.

My truck get's OVER 20 mpg on highway trips, at 75+ mph. No gas Ford can touch that.

But honestly, I really AVERAGE about 17 mpg for all my driving; to work, around town, cold starts, and highway. SO,

If I figure the difference in MY milage vs. friend's Fords that I know about (and my general knowledge about vehicle's fuel economy), I come up with just under $800. To wit.
20,000 miles/17 mpg = 1176gal in a year for me.
1176 x $2.00 = $2352.00 bux I spend in a year.

20,000 miles/14 mpg = 1428 for the Ford
1428 x 2.00 = $2857.00

Whoops! I did the math wrong! That's what I get for doing it on a cell phone calculator while driving! Lol.

So I only save $500.00 a year. I still take it. Plus gas prices are on the rise, so the margin is only going to get wider.

BTW, My girl friends '04 1500, 5.3 xcab, sb, 4x4 get over 22 mpg on the highway, so even better than my truck does. Haven't tried towing w/it yet.

Leroy
03-18-2005, 09:33 PM
Storm; 20,000 miles! That's your first problem, just drive less! In the 4x4 I avg ~9k/year.

As I told my son tonight, I could effectively cut the gas price in half by getting rid of the LX470 and buying an Accord.

Thomas (Storm861triple), I think the big difference is you have a manual transmission. It seems the manufactures are offering less models with the manual. I checked and saw Chevy still offeres it with the 5.3, but not on the Z71 or 1500HD. On the Ford F-150 the manual is only available with the V-6. You can get the 5.4 and a manual on the F-250 though.

Although I have mainly prefered and owned Fords, I will have to admit that it seem the GM's do get a little better milage in simular equiped trucks.
As far as styling goes, I prefered the 97-03 era F-150's over the new body design. If I was buying new today, I would lean towards a F-250. In my opinon, better looking that the F-150. Would love to get the Powerstroke, but not sure it is worth the extra money.

It's nice and firm...Uh...I mean....It's a 3.73. Both our trucks are 3.73 gears. But the milage we recorded was going above 70 mph. On one tank she was averaging 85 mph (most of the time traveling above 90), and the thing still got 19.x mpg!

I think the big difference is you have a manual transmission. It seems the manufactures are offering less models with the manual.
I think the manual helps MY truck do better than the same thing w/an auto, but her truck does even better than mine, even saddled w/an auto.

I agree that it is getting harder and harder to get sticks, and that pisses me off to no end. I would have a '03 or newer (because of the engine not the "nose") chevy 1500 5.3 right now instead of my '96...if you could get a stick. But I refuse to sell my '96 because you can no longer get an x-cab 1500 w/a stick! Grrrr.

As for the 1500 Z71, what would anyone want that for?? You're paying a premium for basically a decal kit. And yes, the shocks are slightly better, but those are worn out in 50,000 miles anyway. Complete waste of money. Buy a 1500 Silverado LT, Blow the 4x4 decals off the bed w/a pressure washer, and buy new "Z71" decals from the dealer for next to nothing.

Back to the manual trans's though, it's lame you can't get them anymore. I'd so love to see that Chevy 5.3 w/a medium duty (read: efficient) six speed and 4.11 gears. I bet you could pull 23 mpg out of that combo with some smooth, heads up driving!

I wasn't aware that the manual trans wasnt available but it goes hand in hand with the half ton crew Z71 being available in ONLY 5.3L with 3.42 OR 4.10 ratios. Makes me think of a grocery getter. This auto trans only BS really irks me too. I've had a couple '90 GMC's w/ the 350 and a 5 speed and they pulled trailers better than any 1/2 ton auto I've had. Dodge hasn't offered a manual trans in their 1/2 tons w/ 360 motors since 93.

Mag,

Did you get the truck? My daughter and I went up and looked at the truck again. I then had her try of the back seat in the super crew cab. Obviously she liked the comfort of the crew cab. I'm really torn about the difference between the 5 1/2' and 6 1/2' beds. I know I'll probably put a tool chest back there, so with the crew cab all I'll have left is about 3'. Then I'm thinking about all the luggage two teen age girls bring to the lake  In my Slverado X cab, they can slip it beneath the back seat. With the Ford, there is no room under the seat. Hell............I just don't know what to do now

After a number of years using the 6 1/2 foot bed, I believe I could live with the 5 1/2 foot bed. My biggest problem would be when I am hauling lumber as it is difficult hauling anything longer than 8 ft. now.

I have had a tonno cover on my truck since new and love it and use the bed as a big trunk. They have tonno covers (http://extang.com/docs/toolboxtonno.html) now that work with the tool boxs.

Go with what suits you best. For me it wold be the SuperCrew.

dont know about ford, but the Chevy half ton crew's 5.5 ft bed was shortened by lopping off the front, killing my use of my old favorite floor box that nestled nicely between the wheel wells and bed front. Depending on the tool box you use, your ford may also have a shortened space in front of the wells, I dont know.

With the sides as high as they are on the Ford, I'm thinking it would be easy to find a 4' wide box that wouldn't sit above the rail. That way I could put a bed cover on. At this point though.....I'm thinking of just putting another 112,000 miles on the Silverado.

My old favorite box sits in the floor and is short enough to fit under the bedrails like you need but 4' wide is no good for me since I want to be able to reach inside the box from the side of the truck.
now I'd bet that there is already an under the rail box maker working on a fine new design for these psuedo bed trucks which will allow your tonneau and my side access needs, but I haven't done the research.

Thrall, Dodge offered a 5 speed and the 360 cu.in. in their 1/2 ton trucks at least as late as 1999, and probably at least until they changed in 2002. My father-in-law has a 1999 Ram 1500 with the 360 and a 5 speed. I loved the 5 speed in my Ram 2500 with the Cummins engine; I wouldn't even consider buying a diesel with an automatic, but that's just my preference.

Almost. I have 146k on my Chev, and it seems to just get stronger. If you see my other posts about trucks, it performs exceptionally well.

Any happy stories after 150-200k miles? I'm at 80k on my LX470 with no problems yet. But believe the best buys keep owners happy past 150k miles. I think the people on the board probably take as good care of their road vehicles as their water machine!
Got a couple. They involve GM's. Had a 90 GMC 1500 4x4, 350, 5sp. Bought it w/ 70k. Ran it up to about 160k, orig engine, trans, tcase and axles. After I sold it, I saw the guy a couple yrs later. Had a 5th wheel in it hauling a horse trlr. He said it was over 200k, still original drivetrain.
Bought another truck, 90 GMC, a few years ago. It was almost identical to the first. Had only 30k on it (bought it in 2000). Drove it up to 100k w/ no major problems.

BTW, My girl friends '04 1500, 5.3 xcab, sb, 4x4 get over 22 mpg on the highway, so even better than my truck does. Haven't tried towing w/it yet.

Update for anyone that cares....

Just took her truck to Powell this weekend for the first time towing. I have to say I'm VERY impressed! The power was better than I expected, especially the low RPM torque; it's ability to pull a hill w/the trans in O.D. I also like that you can almost floor it and as long as you move the gas pedal slowly, it will not down shift. But if you move the pedal quickly it'll drop a gear in an instant, ready to charge a good hill.

So any way, for the the fuel economy going down we ran about 65-70 the whole way, '92 PS 190 in tow. 15.6 mpg using a calculator. Miles driven / gallons pumped.

On the way back, 70-75 mph, A/C on the whole way, 15.4 mpg using a calculator. Miles driven / gallons pumped.

It beat my '96 w/the 5 speed. I really wish you could get her truck w/my trans....
