View Full Version : What do you use to protect your speakers when you Trailer?

I trailer my boat 02 X-star (X-2) often and over very long distances like 15+ hours to Lake Powell. I also trailer the boat to Havasu, Lake trinity, Shasta, and to our local lakes here. The problem is that I have 4 6x9 SS speakers on my tower that inevitably end up covered with bugs, road grime and whatever else, not to mention I worry about rain and what the water will do to the speakers.
I have tried wrapping the tower and speakers in heavy duty saran wrap stuff. What a mess that was! Have any of you figured out a solution? I have heard good things about speakersox and saw the screaminsacs at one of the boat shows. Have any of you used these products? Do they work as advertised? Are there any other brands that I should look out for? I am leaning toward speakersox as I have a friend who just bought them for his Malibu and is very impressed. I was just looking for a Mastercraft perspective. I want something that will keep the crap out of the speakers and make it easy to shine them up when I get to my destination.
Any feedback is appreciated. If I do decide to get some, I will post my thoughts for any of you in a similar position.
Thanks,
Mark

I saw a BU one time that had a cover custom tailored to fit over the entire boat with the tower folded. the cover came very far down the hull, about 1 foot below the rub rail. Covered the platform too.

I just had a cover made for my 2005 Zeroflex tower. The cover encloses the four speakers and board racks. I will try to get some pictures posted later today.

I have seen blue masking tape from home depot used. It removes easily. With the heat driving where you are I'm not sure it would work. In Florida some people coat the front of their cars with Pam spray to help wipe off the bugs.

I would just have some draw string bags/covers made at a local upholstery shop. I’m sure if you told them what you needed them for they could suggest a material.

Not to change the topic of someone else's thread but I'm about to install speakers on my 89 ( In the boat and not on a tower) and I'm still worried about killing speakers. My boat is used in show skiing and often get's wet inside. I'm going to install them in the front of the boat but i'm still worried. Does anyone have any idea of brand or type of speakers I should get?

Great thread. I have a message into speaker sox regarding covers for my Fusion T series combo's. Seems like money well spent. They appear less expensive than the screamin sacs. If anyone has bought either, let us know. If I get some, I'll post some pics.

Ski,
They make marine speakers, also you can use high end car ones as long as they have the plastic cones. Try giving crutchfields a call.

Thanks for all the good feedback. I had never thought of PAM. I could probably use a little PAM and fry and egg or two when we trailer to Powell or Havasu. I bet the kids would think that is cool. I am not sure about the blue tape in the heat either.
I think that I will go with the Speakersox. I put an e-mail into them yeaterday with the measurements of my speakers. I will post some pictures when I get them and let you know what I think.

When are you off to Powell??? I'll be there the second week in May. Well I’ll be at Wahweap marina.

I will be headed to Powell the week before the 4th, but unfortunately for me we launch out of Bullfrog. Wahweep would shave a good 4+ hours off the drive from Cali.
Not likely to get the HB moved anytime soon, so we will live with it, especially cause it is free, except for the gas.

Here is a picture of the covers I just had made for the four speakers and board racks on my X-45. It is made out of the same material as the factory cover.

Here is another shot of the tower cover. I also had the canvas shop add the ties on each side of the cover so it could be pulled tight and lined the cover with flannel to eliminate the scratching on the gel coat and window frame. The factory gives you a two-sided tape velcro attachment that you are supposed to stick to the side of the boat to keep the cover tight.

The first picture did not look too good. Here is another closer picture.
seems like a better thread than the newbie boat one...
Has anyone priced the MC tower covers? Are they as sweet as well crafted as wakepowells?

WakePowell, your covers look awesome.
I ended up ordering the speakersox and got them a week or so ago right before we left for spring break. They look great in my opinion. We spent spring break at lake Nacimiento, CA which is only about 130 miles of trailoring, but with spring in the air, so where the butterflies and just about every other bug known to man. The speakersox worked great. The truck and the rest of the boat were pretty covered with bug slime, but the speakers sparkled when I took the covers off. I thought they looked good on too and they fit really nice, absolutely no flapping in the wind. I left them on half the time on the lake and there is no effect to the sound with them on and it adds a little color to my tower.
I would buy these again and may go back for rack covers if they make them.

I have speaker sox on my 2004 X-Star and they work great. It took a few attempts by the company to get the size just right, but they worked very hard to make them fit and I am totally satisfied. I actually leave them on all the time.
