Somewhere sometime ago I remember someone posted the part numbers for Gelcoat kits from MC. I am in need of the part # for an 86 Mastercraft, need white gel coat. Could someone lead me in the right direction or post those part numbers please?
Also, I am going to attempt this on my own (the stern of the boat) any tips for someone who has never done this before?
Thanks!

Heres a pic of what I am talking about. I am almost wondering if maybe the prior owner had some gel coat problems on tbe back of the boat and maybe painted it instead of gelcoating. The whole stern and back edges like pictured arent's smooth. This is a spot I wetsanded with 320 grit paper today. With very little pressure or work whatver the white stuff on there was it just oozed off very easy. What do you all think?

I think you need to keep sanding.

Nah, I was saving the rest for you to do :D
I figure there is quite a bit left to do, I just started a little spot as I was ready to call it a day to see what it was like.
When do I know I am thru all the gel coat and down to the bare fiberglass?
Spectrum colors has a good tutorial for applying gel coat. It doesn't sound to bad.

http://www.spectrumcolor.com/technicalinfo.htm I was reading their on-line manuals. Lots of good info on that page. Maybe all the boat needs is a fine wet sanding and a good buffing. :twocents:
But I really don't know what I'm talking about, but if the white started coming thru after a little sanding.................

You are going to go for the quart of the liquid gel. Not the paste repair kit??

From what my gel guy said they spray the gel color followed by a layer of black gel and then the fiberglass. When he was sanding out a couple of scratches in mine he said that if they were to deep that the black would show through. I don't know that you need to sand the gel all the way off though. I think you just need to sand it down a bit so the new gel stcks. Kind of like paint.
I have the same yellowing problem with my White 86 prostar.... Before you try grinding, sanding, buffing your @#$ off. You might want to try this stuff called Iron Out... or sometimes call Rust Out.... You can get it at ACE.... I use the powder type that you mix with water.... Mix about 1/3 cup of Iron Out with about 1 cup of water.... Wipe in on the yellow with a sponge and watch it disappear before your eyes... (I guess the yellowing is caused by minerals penetraing the finish... I've tried every fiberglass cleaner, stain remover, polish... you name it... nothing getst the yellow out but this.... and it works with NO effort and has not damaged the finish in over fiver years os use...

Scot, thanks for the advice!! Will try that on the yellow areas!
Update:
Laid the gelcoat on the stern today. Painting on Gel coat really is not that bad, you gotta work quick though, you only have about 15 minutes per batch!!
The crappy part is the sanding, that has to be the messiest stuff I have ever messed with! Thank god for power sanders! Tommorrow I wet sand with 600 grit and then 1000 grit buffing compound. Hope it shines good!!
I am a little concerned that I will be able to blend in the new white with the older white. Thats' where I am hoping this Iron Out stuff works!

resurrected again:headbang:
I'm wanting to paint my 88 K-5 Blazer the same color as the 91 Prostar 190
the blazer is already Red & White (needing painted....member the black primer they used in 88:confused::rolleyes: , but I was looking at the colors for the 91 MC and it shows " 1990-1992 Lacquer Red 3909 862026 943-RL-288"
how do I cross this over into automotive colors?
just have it custom mixed from a color chip?
does Spectrum color just deal in gel coat?
and yet another dumb question....
what color is the white gel coat used by MC in 91?

Sounds like a great Jeremy question! ;)
Not to thread jack this discussion, but while on vacation a couple weeks ago, we picked up a deep scratch on the hull (rear passenger qtr panel) about 2.5" in length and 1-2 mls deep 3/32 in width. I called Spectrumcolor.com and ordered the patch past repair for my model and year. To my surprize, it arrived the next day (Seattle to Spokane, Wash). Now let me say that I have absolutely no gel-coat repair experience whatsoever. However, I have been following threads like this as well as additional resources I've found on the web. Gave it a "try" thinking to myself, "if I screw it up, off to a professional the boat goes". My wife says I'm too much of a perfectionist, but little scratches like this will haunt me till repaired. ;) Well, let me tell you that this patch past stuff is so easy to work with and this evening I finished buffing out my repair and you can't even tell there was a scratch. Color matched exactly and I was pretty proud of my efforts. So for anyone that may be in the same situation, I thought I would share my experience. Today, I ordered another patch paste repair kit in a different color, so I'm going to fix all the minor blemishes on this baby!

milk here is what you do.
take your boat to an automotive paint supplyer. not the bodyshop. Each paint company ( i mean supplyer to body shops) will have a machine, for their brand paint, that can read the color and match it in whatever kind of paint you want. PPG's matching computer is called "The Prophet" it matches to within 99% correctness. The supplyer can print you out a formula that the bodyshop can mix your color off of, or just call them with it or somthing. DuPont and the rest of the companies also have a machine. I do not know what they are called though. I worked for PPG for the last 4 years.

Anyone know of where I can get samples of the gel colors or a color chart. Spectrum doesn't have any and I'm looking for a brighter teal, kinda like was used on the early 90's N boats.
