The Modern Marvels on History Channel about when they built the bridge is really good. Very interesting.

I just went over it two weeks ago. Winds were 45 mph and the speed limit was 20. It was blowing like a you know what and it took a while to cross at that speed. All for a Bloody Mary at the Driftwood in St. Ignace and a few spins at the Roulette table :D

I have heard stories about cars actually getting blown off the bridge because of high winds. Any truth to that Steve?

That's an affirmative on losing it off the Big Mac. Happened to a poor young lass driving a Yugo sometime in the '80s if memory serves. I think the eventual conclusion wasn't so much the wind as that she lost control and hit the (very low) guardrail.http://www.mackinacbridge.org/images/photo-small/DSC03093.JPG

The truth of the tale is there was a lady speeding during a high wind warning (Est @ 40-50) in the left hand northbound lane. At the moment she changed lanes to the right hand lane a gust of wind took her YUGO into the guard rail. Her light Yugo slamming into the 12 inch high wheel guard rail (seen in white above) was enough to lift the front end the very time the wind blew and actually flipped her car over the guard rail, she went over the side, car and all. Empty semi-trailers have had the rear wheels lifted off the deck of the bridge on many occassions. My wife closes her eyes when we cross and states she can feel it moving laterally (it does).

The bridge was just on Dirty Jobs last week. Mike Rowe was painting the inside of one of the supports. It was a pretty funny episode, and it looked like a really crappy job:D

I remember as a kid my dad taking us camping near the bridge when it was under construction. I remember seeing the work boats going out and all the construction workers sitting on the gun wall of the boat with they're orange life jackets on. Boy, I was six years old at that time.
The History channel has a program on it I think it's called modern marvels.
