My driving position is a bit awkward for me. The seat is not adjustable, and the steering wheel is a reach and at an angle that is not optimum (it's like driving a semi). If I move the seat forward, it will make it difficult to get in and out of the seat.

What I would REALLY like is to install a tilt/telescoping wheel in it's place. I know that the telescoping part is probably a pipe dream, but what about the tilt part? Anybody know of aftermarket Tilt mechanisms that would connect to my steering box, or at least the steering cable?

If there's nothing available, I'm probably going to head over to Pick-N-Pull to see what I can bust apart and MacGyver myself something.

You can very easily find a new tilt steering helm. Just go to a local and knowledgable boat shop or repair place and ask him what will work. Teleflex makes a ton and it should really not be more than a few hundred dollars for a new helm. Probably even cheaper, if you do not need to replace your cable.

Now, for your pipe dream..... I have seen what you are talking about with regards to the telescopic helm. I drove a 40' regal express cabin, that had a telescopic helm. All it was, was a knob at the center of the steering wheel, that when you loosened, the wheel came out about 3". I have no idea who makes it, but when I go for my bike ride through the marina tonight, I will see if I can find the boat I am talking about and take some pics for you...

Cool! Thanks Cam!

I don't Telescoping is really a big deal to do...Tilting requires some form of U-Joint, which is more difficult.

If I get a tilting setup, I can probably find a way to make it telescope (splined shaft with a lock...high-pitch threaded shaft with a lock...concentric tubes with lock...).

But if I can buy the whole thing and it's not worth more than my whole boat...

I left them a voicemail. I couldn't tell how to order...

I also found this Teleflex model for about 120 bux...but will have to research more to see if it will fit.

In 1990 MC came out with the tilt steering wheel and the only thing they changed between 1989 and 1990 was the helm portion, same cable. The tilt wheel also placed the steering wheel about 1 1/4"+- closer to the driver because of the room taken up by the knuckle mechanism between the wheel and the dash base. A used one is a option along with a check with MC through your dealer for a new replacement too.

A used one would be perfect, I'll take a look. Since my boat is a '76, I'm going to have to retrofit something in place of the stock setup...

Thanks for the info TMCNo1.
