I thought my starter had failed, so I purchased a new one from DIM, I just went to put it in and when I took off the old starter I found these in the bottom of the bell housing and one lodged inbetween the fly wheel and the starter. I have never had the transmission out of the boat so I guess I need some heads up on what I might expect. I am guessing the items found in the bell housing are busted springs, and I am assuming they have been there for some time. What are the springs from? Is there a pressure plate?

Those pieces are from your DAMPNER plate. It bolts to your
flywheel and takes the shock from when you put the boat in gear.

I would check ALOT closer before you ruin another starter. The plate is pretty easy to replace. Probably take about 5 hours to do.

a) disconnect the battery and PULL starter
b) disconnect drive shaft coupler
c) loosen bell housing bolts from block and remove transcooler
d) unbolt motor mounts from angle iron in floor
e) using a small bottle jack. Jack up motor under exhaust motor mounts
f) remove wiring harness
g) pull transmission w/ bell housing attached
h) remove dampner plate in fly wheel and replace TORQ to specs
i) work this backwards

You can email me for more directions
