View Full Version : Hunting shack

I know it's early to be talking about deer hunting, but thought I would share the project I've been working on the past few weekends.

We have 160 acres that we own and hunt on, and we have been saying that it would be nice to have a shack to meet at for lunch, that we could get out of the weather and warm up in if needed. My parent have a cottage a 5-10 minutes drive away that we stay in, but we usually do not go there during the day if we are out in the woods.

Well, one of my dad's neighbors was going to tear down a galvanized grain bin, and my brother suggested that we take it to use as a lunch room. At first we thought he was kidding, but after thinking about it, it is animal proof, weather proof and the price is right. We had some large 4' tall by 5.5' long sliding windows in storage and a door, all we needed would be some lumber to build a deck and a second floor. The bottom is sealed so we can lock it up. The second floor we will leave open and we will not leave anything of value in it. A wood stove is in the down stairs and the pipe goes through the second. We figure heat goes up and this will save room.

Let me know what you think.

We thought about paint, but then decided not to. It is over 30 yrs old the way it is, and it still looks good, so rust prevention is not an issue, and it kind of blends in as is well enought that I dont thing the varments will pay much attention to it.

so far the beer taste pretty good while sitting in this thing also!:)

That looks very similar to our cabin we built about 4 years ago. We don't use it for hunting but we do use it for snowmobiling and boating. There is a lot of hunting going on around it though. We have had moose in the front yard as well as bear and deer.

Draw me a map so I can stop bye on my way back from deer hunting and drink a beer or two in your new hunting lodge.......looks nice enough that you wouldn't ever have to go back to the cabin.....probably should look into a generator, beer fridge and satellite TV.

I had an overhang there that was really just a huge soffett. So I decided to put some rafters up there out of some really old cypress true 2x6's and put old rusted tin roofing on it. Just a crazy idea I had while riding home one day. I also used the same rusted metal roofing on the porch ceilings & bedroom ceilings too. Heres a pic of the front porch ceiling. The flooring I'm using has been sawn from pecan trees that my grandfather grew about 75 years ago. I'm building a subdivision in the pecan grove and a few trees had to come down where the roads are gonna be. I'll post some pics when thats done.

awesome!

do you realize the value of Pecan trees?:eek3:

had a buddy that had a few blow down from "straight line winds"

shipped them to Japan so they could peel & veneer them.....
put about $6,000 per tree in his pocket!

Sure wish I had known that! I've still got some tree's that will have to come down when we start building houses. These trees have been in our family for years, so I HAD to use them in my cabin. However, the next ones to come down might just head overseas.:D See if you can find out about this for me if you will. Thanks.

Bagged my first buck last weekend! Deer was good sized, rack is small and no matter how many times I look at it it just doesnt get any bigger.

Overall we got 3 for 4 which was enough for us to call it a season.

He came up behind me of course the area I figured no deer would come through so I had to do a complete 180 in my stand. I waited till he came in to about 50 feet which also happened to be when he turned totally broadside to me. Nice clean one shot kill, had him cleaned and back at the truck by noon on opening morning!

I actually just bought a 30-06 this year, I've been hunting with a 12 guage for the past 10 years and a 20 guafe before that but after some ongoing sighting issues and a new stand I decided it was time for a rifle. Didnt need the range on this one but theres always next year.

kinda on-topic, I used a bonded bullet on the second deer and was VERY unimpressed. I went outta my way to be sure and get a premium bullet with excellent knock-down power, so I could use it on Elk... Shot this whitetail at 80yards with a Winchester accu-bond 180gr 7mm rem mag...

Good vital shot behind the left shoulder and NO exit wound... at 80 YARDS... you can imagine what the chest cavity looked like!

The deer jolted about 30yds into the trees as well... I went that monday, berated the "experts" at the gun shop and bought nozler partitions (like I knew to do in the first place! ).

when I resighted at 100 yards with the same grain and brand of nozler partitions, the bullet dropped 2" from where the accubonds were shooting !!

My resulting thinking is that the accubond is very precision and very flat shooting. Which is nice if I am shooting targets, but big game? Not so much.
