OK, most of you that see this know I am considering a new laptop. well, this is sort of related to that as I want to know what anti virus software you guys and gals recommend. I currently use McAfee at home and at work. our subscriptions are about to expire soon, and I was thinking of looking at other options. Now I have heard that AVG software is good and doesnt "bog down" your computer as much as McAfee does. what are the pros and cons of these? anyone use AVG?

and how about "tune up" type software. the ones that claim to keep your computer nice and clean and run smoothly. Any ideas there??

any input would be greatly appreciated. :wavey: THANKS!:)

Keep in mind, I am asking about this for our work computers too. we dont have a choice there. We can only go PC because of GM's software vendors. so I would like to find out what the best antivirus, cleanup software is out there.

AVG is good as long as you're not networking your computers. The newest version actually blocks networking :(

Trend Micro is very good and the choice at JDSU and also my last employer THomson. I use their free on line scanner at home often. I have Avast at home. Haven't had a virus attack.

Use the free version of AVG, that is just antivirus, all that other stuff that they add on is useless anyway.

crapcleaner cleans up junk, to just connect to the internet you arnt networking, a network is when you would be sharing files with other computers in our household. Try crapcleaner, it will clean your temp internet files, cookies, recylcinbind, unused dll.s which will be alot, it can also analyze your computer for errors and delete them which seems to work for me, also might wnat to try adaware and spybot for internet files and spyware

No, I'm talking about using one computer as a cheap server. AVG blocks that usage...although as a anti virus program, it shouldn't.

That is probably the firewall that is built into it that is blocking that. You would need to go in and configure which ports you want to open up depending on what type of server you are using it for.

so the firewall stuff is unnecessary??

what about spyware??

Antivirus is all we need???

crapcleaner sounds good. I think its important to clean out all the junk. temp files and such. Dont the "disk cleanup" and "disk defragmenter" features take care of that stuff though?

No, it does not interfere with wireless internet. I haven't set up the shared folders on my laptop yet, so I don't know if it complicates that. It didn't on our previous machine though.
