Thanks in advance,

The Powerslot is an option that is comprised of a transmission that turns 1 rotation for every one and a half rotations of the engine, a larger prop shaft (1 1/8 inches in diameter instead of 1 inch) a larger propeller (14 inch instead of 13 inch(different pitch too)) and originally, a concave area in the back of the hull to accomodate the bigger propeller.(the Slot) The result.... great hole shot and pull!

It is a gear reduced transmission 1.5:1 ratio, versus a standard 1:1 transmission. It is designed to give you more low end torque and pulling power out of the hole. I have owned both, and definitely liked the powerslot, however, for everyday, normal skiing, the 1:1 tranny more than handles the job.

Hope this follows the thread but if an owner does not know if it is a powerslot, how can a you tell…boat serial number or transmission number?

The 1:1 Transmission is smaller.
he direct drive uses a 1 in. shaft and a 13x13 prop and the Powerslot uses a 1 1/8 shaft and a 14x18 prop. The prop sizes may vary slightly depending on model and year of boat.
The older boats use a Borg Warner Velvet Drive. The newer boats use a Hurth (made in Italy?).
Does anybody know what year they switched from BW to Hurth?
Here is a picture of the BW Velvet Drive 1:1

I believe the switch to Hurth was around 95. Not positive though.
Two easy ways to tell if it's a pslot. (1) look for the 1 1/8" diameter shaft or look at the prop. If it is a 13x13x1, it's a 1:1. (2) Look on the transmission. There will be an info plate or sticker that will say which one it is.
Another thing to consider on the power slot is the possibility that the prop column in the wake will be a bit more pronounced than on the 1:1. But those gear reduced transmissions sure do have a great hole shot and hold their own well against a skier with a lot of tug.

The powerslot is nice to have, but I agree, not needed most of the time. There is a little more propwash from the larger prop also. Also it is not needed as much with the newer more powerful engines.
A friend of mine who has a 1:1 and I trade off as drivers of each others boat. He is always pulling the rope out of my hands when he drives my boat and I am always dragging him thru the water when I drive his boat.

I was greasing my rudder and cleaning the bildge when I notice that my transmission tag said it was a 1:1 transmission. My boat is a 1984 Stars and Stripes Edition. It was my belief that almost all boats that year came with the powerslot transmission. Any ideas???
Thanks!

It was an option back then.

Sorry for the thread jack, But in my manual it shows a filter in the transmission should be replaced when changing tranny fluid. Upon obtaining a filter for the tranny at my dealer. he claims "there is no filter in the powerslot" I figured I was mistaken as they reference both tranny's in the manual. It appears I wasn't, it clearly states in the manual to change tranny filter upon changing oil. anybody have any insight on this topic or come across this issue when changing tranny oil?
I have an '02 197 TT with the LQ9 and Powerslot.
Thanks,
Chris

Does any one know how many were made? I am thinking that this may be a rare boat... I think I read somewhere that very few of the '84 boats came with the 1:1 trans. Although my boat's hull does have a upward curve to it above the prop, strut and rudder.
It was an option back then.

I just sold my 94 190 lt1 w/o the slot and that boat has a good deal of power. One of the other guys in our rotation has the exact same boat but with the tbi and while still powerfull not quite as quick or smooth as the lt1. I've skied a 93 carbed with the slot and preferred the pull of my lt1 without to it, but if I could have found an lt1 with a slot when I was looking I would have gotten that instead. My previous boat to that was an 86 powerslot and in both boats the tranny ratio was on the plate attached to the tranny itself. You could try looking for that plate also.
Last year the other guy had mentioned to me he would like to sell his 94 190 this spring and get a 197. Since you are in Michigan also if you might be interested I can pass your name/email along.

Thanks! You have the 1:1 tranny, however you also likely have the slotted hull configuration for the drive option. The 8th and 9th space from the engine serial number will read 10 for the 1:1 and 15 for the 1.5:1.
