Well I fiberglassed in the area I was concerned about. That was my first experience messing with the stuff, not to hard but man does it have a scent!

Here are some pics, 1st is of the area I glassed in. 2nd is a quick pic of the boat just after sanding down all the old carpet glue. Got the carpet today, thinking maybe later this week I can take a whirl and putting that in.

I used to work at a place that made fiberglass gel coat....shipping and receiving
company name = Co-Plas in Ft. Smith Arkansas

it has a very unique odor... I remember getting that small patch kit for the front of my boat, opened the yellow envelope it was in, told my wife to smell and tell me what it reminds her of.

Immediately, she said CO-PLAS!!!
haven't been there in 20 years, but she instantly recognized the smell.:purplaugh

HEhe, just wait till you get a whiff of that carpet glue...... not quite as aromatic as the gelcoat but you'll enjoy it every bit as much.

That looks like B 1/2, smells kind of like garlic and funk, nasty stuff to get off your hands but holds good. Did you cut out the bad part like George mentioned or just fill in the hole?

Mag Red's got Saturday Night Fever! :woohoo:

Having fun when I get a chance to work on the boat. It's just like they say, a boat is nothing more than a big Hull in the water that you dump money into!

The budget to fix it up sure seems to be expanding! :purplaugh

Was thinking next winter will be the engine year for the boat. Has anyone ever done this or heard of someone doing this? I keep getting performance parts catalogs and emails for HO 351 windsors. There is one in particular that advertises a 351 Long Block rated for 420 hp that is naturally aspirated. I thought that sure would be fun to have in the ole 86! I had the transmission built a little extra beefy to handle extra kick (current motor is hopped up) Anyone ever dropped a hot motor in a inboard before? I know its not really needed but it sure would be fun!!

The 425 HP/454 was an option back then. I rode and skied behind one. Overkill, but WOW!!! :eek3: :eek3:
go for it

There is one or 2 on here with that big engine I believe.

Yeah, I am thinking hard about it. Mine has more than enough giddy up but you can never have to much power right? :D The price is very similar to rebuilding my current block so what the heck! :steering:

Just remember that that engine is mighty thirsty, even compared to the small blocks who can, of course, drink it down.

There is a guy over on the MBO board that has built a very hot motor that he dropped into a Sportster. 420hp and GPSed at 68 mph. Read this thread for more info. http://www.malibuboatowners.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12734&hl=

Hahaha! "It's the catsass." That's funny. What is it about those malibus and their top end. The stock ones seem to hit mid fifties from all I've read. Maybe that's just some of them.

And here I am just as pleased as can be with the little torque bump I got from the performer intake. Probably the last upgrade I'll ever make until the motor blows up and I drop a fuel injected replacement engine in it.

BrianM
03-09-2005, 06:11 PM
From what I know most of the Malibus (slalom boats) have a lot less wetted surface and displace less water than the MCs. This allows the same HP to push the boat faster and usually burns less fuel. Those Sportsters are light, narrow and fast.

east tx skier
03-09-2005, 07:16 PM
Sportsters are tiny. But how do you think the wetted surface of today's response compares with an early 90s MC? I mentioned on another thread that according to the boat buyers guides, the 93 PS 190 with the 351HO @285 HP (pslot) hit 36 mph in 5.33 seconds, just a bit faster than the 05 197 running the MCX, a four blade, and likely a power slot. No doubt, 93 was a lighter boat, but I figure it, too, had less wetted surface. Still top end was 46, tops.

I would be willing to bet that they are similar as far as wetted surface but even a base Response nowadays is running 315hp and generally they are quoting top speeds of right at 50mph with the Hammerhead or the LT1 with 380+ hp even their Monsoon has 345hp now. More hp = More mph at least to a point.

Amen to that. As one of the owners of the "BIG" motor I can tell you that it sucks gas like you won't believe. The power is nice, but the EFI 351s actually seem to pull better to me. Though I'm comparing newer boats to older boats in this comparision so it could be differences in the hull. I'd just hop up your 351 or put an EFI motor in before you put a big-block. Also, the motor box on the 454 is a good 8 inches bigger in all directions than for the 351 so you might have clearance issues, different motor mounts, who knows what else. Not worth it to me.

Seems to me the big block, late 80's boats all said "barefoot" on the sides.??? MC was trying to get a little more speed out of these for barefooting....

I have to somewhat disagree... when it comes to comp boats, top end usually has much more to do with wetted surface at top end then raw HP. I know people who have dropped $10k into a motor to only get 3-4 extra MPH's out of it. Comp bass boats aren't all that light and come close to a 190 in weight (2000 lbs +), yet they do 70 MPH out of a motor with only 200 HP. It's because they only have 6" of boat in the water at 70 compared to our 200 square feet.

BrianM
03-10-2005, 12:18 PM
I absolutley agree with you Jimmer. I though that is what I was saying. The new Malibus have less wetted surface than the new MCs thus they top out a bit faster. But compare an older MC to a newer Malibu with about the same wetted surface and the Malibu is still faster mostly do to increase in HP. With the same wetted surface area you generally get more speed with more hp.

You can only push a tug boat so fast... I always tell, ( and was told this before I got an MC), If you wanna go fast do NOT get a ski boat..

Anyone remember Extreme Boats out of Texas? They were an I/O, very similar hull as many inboards, but ran a Volvo Duoprop. Still had 3 fins under it & was the only AWSA approved I/O.
As I recall the boat did like 52 mph with a basic EFI 350. But they had an option for a blown big block too. The thing put out like 700 horse & did over 90 mph on the same hull!

I have a promo video from like 1999 & the boats are incredible. Around the boats, pick up a skier in reverse, electric telescopic boom & extended pylon, the list of really out there stats goes on & on.
Too bad their dealer network is next to nothing......

Ski Sanger made an I/O for three years - 86-88. It was AWSA approved for both three event and barefooting. I've still got my '87. It's a great boat - the hull and the gelcoat are as sturdy as anything I've ever seen. It's got wooden stringers that are still rock solid. This boat is fuel efficient and fast. It also tracked amazingly. We skied it in the course all the time. With the right prop it will do 60-65 easy. I've never been totally happy with the hole shot, though. I did switch to a Pirahna comp prop last year, and that helped. Now that I've got my Mastercraft, I need to sell the Sanger. If you know anyone who wants a GREAT family boat that is also a really good ski boat, let me know.

I actually hate to let it go, but having TWO boats in front of the house is giving my wife leverage to buy anything - "You bought what?" "Well, you have two boats!"

For what it's worth - I'm not putting anyone down for dropping more ponies in their comp boat. To each his own. I wish I had that kind of dough.

That Sanger hull reminds me of the same era flightcrafts (although the flightcrafts were inboars made by malibu).

Yeah, it is kind of similar. It's a 21' boat, but it doesn't have any more room in the interior than my 19' MC. The extra two feet are all in the bow. I guess that's why it handles the rough water better.

That's what my ex-sister-in-law's husband's boat is like (his is a 88 or 89 flightcraft). 21', but it's all in the bow. And - it'll porpous at full-throttle.

At least the kids have the extra 2' to play under the closed bow :eek3:

Interesting - with the I/O Sanger, you can trim the engine to put the bow wherever you want it - one of the few advantages to the I/O.

I can put a lot of stuff under the bow, but it's not easy fishing it back out.

Took a personal day today and worked on the boat. Here are a few pics of what I accomplished today.

Pic # 1

The Observer seat base- Mag Red had a great idea and suggested I paint the base as it was scratched and faded. After some 600 grit sandpaper and some black gloss plastic spray paint this piece looks like new!

6ballsisall
03-14-2005, 05:24 PM
The prior owner of this boat pitched the rear seat (she was a wakeboarder and had fat sacs in it all the time) After searching long and hard on ebay with no luck I am making my own. This is the base of the seat. My plan is to have two padded seats, 1 on each side and the center section will remain carpeted but not padded. Stepping in and out of the boat with a ski all the time is pretty touch on the vinyl but the carpet should be able to take it.

Lastly, the side panels in the boat had somehow dissapeared from the prior owner and it looked pretty crummy. These are the start of some panels I made. I used the 4'x8' fiberglass sheets for showers, I plan to cover them with the same vinyl that will be used on the new skins.

Jeff, your boat looks good. I wanted new carpet but the guy at the carpet place (link here on the board) takes only PayPal. I don't use PayPal for reasons of preference. Thus I'm still carpetless. Where did you get your carpet, please? That looks real nice, as does the base.

I have a back seat out that I'd be glad to take a few pics for reference if you need any to look at or any dimensions on my rear seat as well. I have it out now cleaning it.

Again, your boat looks great, just knowing it will turn out nice. I like the idea about the side panels too... That's sweet...

Thanks!

I got the carpet at Lowes. It was around $4.50 per linear foot (6 foot wide rolls. I got 30' linear feet and came out with plenty extra.

Yeah, shoot me some pics of your back seat if you get a chance that would be awesome!

Sporty I can help you with the installation. Cut a 6' x 12' section in half length wise so you have (2) 3'x12" pieces. Remove the two center panels in the floor, you will cover these seperately. YOu should now have two straight edges running up along both sides of the engine. Lay the carpet out so the one side will wrap the edge of the open compartments in the boat. (one behind the engine and one infront of the engine) Glue the carpet from the inside and work out towards the sides of the boat. Do the floor first, then fold the carpet onto itself, glue the sides, and then work the remaining carpet up the sides. Make sense??? :wavey:

Your boat looks great. Could you please tell me how you carpeted that center panel in front of the engine where the pylon is. I can't figure out how to remove mine since the passenger seat base does not come off. I have the carpet ready to go in, but haven't done anything yet as I can't figure out how to get the panel out. Thanks Mark and DRC. The sanding and never ending sanding was a real bizatch. It sutill isn't perfectly smooth and it won't be. I am worried about sanding anymore as I think the gel is already getting thin. I would recommend to anyone that wants to try this, definetely spray it on, not brush like I did. I bet you could probably get a better coat with spray.

To blend that stuff to an unnoticeable appearance is near impossible and that's if you have a good color match to begin with.

I applied it on a part of the bow and alas, it didn't seem to whiten it as much as I hoped. It did clean it up nice though. I think if the weather permits I might clean the whole gel coat with it.

My boat is an 87 prostar powerslot. The passenger seat makes it difficult to get that center piece out. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough. It seems it is one piece from the motor to past the battery area under the dash. I didn't think I could wedge it out, as I tried this once last year. Is there a seem under the carpet....what I mean is, is that boar actually two pieces maybe??

I don't know if you have had any experience with acids like this, but if there is any strength to it at all, you need to add the acid to the water. If it's really strong, the water will boil on top of the acid and spray all over the place. This is especially true with sulphuric, since it's so much denser than water.

Also, don't use acid on concrete unless you intend to replace it soon. Muriatic will age concrete 50-100 years in about a minute. If you absolutely can't use it someplace else, hose the concrete off first, so the acid will dilute when it hits the water. Flowing water is best, so the acid can't sit on the concrete for any length of time.

Yep I added acid to water. It still got nice and warm

Crap!! I hope I didn't kill the concrete!! It was wet when I poured it on and it didn't set on there for maybe more then 30 seconds or so and then I washed it off with a hose for quite a while. Guess I will see what happens when it dries!

I had to completely take out the passenger seat, base and all. Mine is 1 piece from the motor box all the way past the battery tray. You have to take out the ski pylon as well. I am not certain on yours since it is a year newer but I wouldn't be suprised if they were similar.

Thanks Andre and Mag! I will be nice to this one, the one you saw Mag was from the prior owner.

Andre, to answer your question, here is what is left on my to do list

Windshield- just the side pieces
Re-rivet parts of the moulding that has come loose
Redo the instrument cluster-it looks crummy
Relabel the boat- I am debating making it a Stars and Stripes or giving it a more contemporary label set like the lettering used on todays MC.

Some of it may have to wait until this fall, at this point I am getting to the point where I just want to use it. I bought it for $2500 and had hopes of not putting more than $3800 in it total (including purchase price). I think I will come out some where near $4800-$5k. Hopefully I can get that back out of it in a few years!

Is all the upholstery white? It's a very clean look and is really sharp but I'm worried it might be hard to keep clean. My rear panel (I don't have a back seat either) gets really banged up so I'm going to be curious to see if the vinyl holds up better or worse than the fiberglass.

Keep up the good work. This is great to watch!

Yes it is all white minus some colors on the motor box. Good point about sitting on the buttons. I think ia m going to bolt em up and use them like they are for a while and see what I think. If I get a hankering I can always add the buttons.
Hopefully I can keep them clean. We own leather interior in our cars and I am a freak about applying treatment to them all the time and keeping them clean. I bought a bottle of 303 for protectant. The vinyl thickness used here is 37 oz marine vinyl.

My vote No buttons.
Water pools in them, gets under the vinyl and into the seat foam
harder to clean around them,
eventually will start to tear if you don't reinforce the back side

Put the buttons on the seatbacks if you want the color.

Keep the seat bottoms clean. Hooks, tears, dirt, just like everyone else said. It would be an easy conduit for H20 to get into the seats.

Well the boat is at rest in it's new summer home. She still is a little grumpy and needs some more timing adjustments but I think she is going to settle down soon and start acting like a good boat.

Here's a pic!

No temp gauge on my 86' but it's a chilly warm type water. No need for a wetsuit but that 1st jump in might create the slightest amount of shrinkage! C'mon out! :steering:

BTW, nice avatar! Boat Mate will be hunting you down! :uglyhamme
