View Full Version : Possible Transmission Leak On An 89 Pro Star 190

I Keep Getting Oil Of Some Kind In My Bilge. I Check The Engine Oil Regularly And Its Not The Engine So Im Guessing Its The Transmission. Has Anyone Ever Pulled Their Engine Themselves And Worked On It While Youve Had The Boat Out For The Winter? Do I Need To Take The Whole Engine/tranny Out To Do This Work Or Can It Be Done In The Boat?

Is This A Common Occurance? Where Do The Transmissions Usually Leak From? A Seal?

Any Tips/advice Would Be Appreciated.
Thanks Guys!

What color is the oil? Amber/brown/dark brown (engine) or red (transmission)?

Its Hard To Tell...whenever I Turn The Bilge Pump On, I See A Rainbow In The Water

And The Engine Oil Hasnt Dropped All Summer Since Ive Had The Boat

Rainbow could also be gas, right? Just a thought.

Its Definitely Not Gas, I Never Smell That. Its Greasy On Your Fingers

Dip a paper towel in it to get a color.

My '89 had a small tranny leak a number of years ago. Mine was the o-ring where the shift lever enters the trans case. It was a small leak, in fact we did not even notice it until the low level caused the clutches to get warped. Keep an eye on your trans fluid level, and get it fixed if it's leaking.
I had our local MC shop fix it, because at the time I was a bit afraid to do it, but now I'd try it myself.
Good luck,
