I'm new to the whole waterski thing. Been doing it occasionally for the last 15 years but only a couple times a summer when not wakeboarding or kneeboarding. Due to a lower back surgery, I got into it a lot more this summer and plan to continue. I'm currently skiing on a combo "fat" ski of which the pair was maybe $150. I'm riding at 30 MPH, open water riding only.

I've got the track on a 5 year old KD 7000, 66", double high wrap. My question is, can I grow with this ski better than my other ski? It's cheap enough that I'm willing to take a bit of a chance. By the way, I'm about 185 lbs.

Any help that you guys can give me would be appreciated, I'm especially interested in if this ski will be way too small for me that buying it would be a mistake.

Thanks!

I skiied a 2002 KD 7000 up until last year when I got a 2006 KD CR-7. My KD 7000 was a 67" and I weigh 160lbs. I used my KD 7000 for a lot of open water skiing and I really enjoyed it. As with any performance ski though, it is not to comfortable for cruisin'!! It likes to be on an edge and is fast out of the turns. You can definitely grow on the ski and you will enjoy, but if you are looking to just cruise around behind the boat, I would look at a little more of an intermediate ski.

With your size weight and skiing speed that 66" is going to be way too short. You would need to be on a 68" or maybe even a 70". I am 5'11" 180lbs and skied on a 68" KD 7000 for two years. Great ski that took me from skiing open water to skiing the course at 30mph to skiing the course 36mph into 28 off. It is older technology a little heavier and not as fast as the newr skis but will be a great steady and predictable ski for your use and grow with.

KD's are great skies but they are outdated. Get yourself a blem model of the D3's. They are a much better ski and you will truly enjoy it much more than the 7000. I know because "I've been there, done that."

I agree you should be looking for a slightly longer ski at your weight. At this time of year, there are lots of deals to be had if you look. The year end sales can be pretty compelling on the current model skis. Did you look at Ski-it-again.com? You could also call some of the dealers on this site that sell equipment and see what kinds of deals they may offer.

Good Luck.
