One more boat has cropped up in my hunt for a good used tow boat. You guys have been helpful in the past so I thought I'd try again. There is a 1999 MC Sportstar 19 Skier for sale in my area in about my price range. I don't know much about this model and I'm wondering if anyone can help. I'm looking for a family cross over boat. It would be nice if it leaned a little more toward a good ski wake than a good boarding wake. The ad says the engine is 310 HP but not much else although it does have a tower.
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks - Gene
I'm fairly sure that a '99 Sportstar has the same hull as the '97 Prostar. The boat came out in '98 after the Prostar hull changed.

I think that TPH is right they released the Sportstar model after they had some "challenges" (I didn't say problems) with the 98 model. My understanding of the SportStar package is it is the hull, motor and very little options (keeps the price down). Also, I believe instead of a observers bench their is another captain's chair.

In 1998 Mastercraft introduced the SPORTSTAR 19. The same year that MC came out with the now imfamous Prostar 190 that needed retrofit wings and a FOIL on the rudder. The Sportstar was the same hull as the previous Prostar 190 from 1995-1997. It was introduced as a PRICEPOINT Mastercraft to stay inline with Correct Crafts smaller Nautique. The Sportstar came equipped in 98 (only 98) with a very torquey 305ci TBI Powerplant putting out 265 HP. I have had 2 of them and they where GREAT boats. 2 color gel only, 1 color interior, no handrails. Basically a down and dirty Ski boat. In 1999 when a GM designer was brought into MC the Sportstar went from a 19995 (Not trailer) boat to a 24995 Boat w/ trailer, a bunch if NEW interior designs and a 310 HP TBI motor better known as the PREDATOR motor. 99 is also the first year for that boat as a OPEN BOW. 2000 had the intro of the X-5 Same hull came with a tower some ballast and cool graphics. The Sportstar X-5 Sportstar 195 where all produced till 2002. I have a 2000 Sportstar /19 Skier with a ZeroFlex Tower (Closed Bow) It does everything I need it to do and more. Changed props to a 4 blade stainless cutter 13 x 13 1/2 No Frills boats.
Great boat You can sell em for what you paid for them with no problem
Hope this helps

99 SportStar WaterSki Magazine Article.
If this is too small to read, PM me and I will scan larger. The magazine also has a article on the open bow version.

i also have a 98 sportstar 19 that i purchased used in 2001. it is a real kick a** boat for the $$$ and i have enjoyed it. only complaint is that it seems hard to back (pulls to right) compared with some prostar 190's
that i have driven. the offset rudder probably contributes to this problem. all i can say is that it is a real adventure to see my wife try to back the boat. everyone takes cover and gives her plenty of room.
also, the wake is a bit much for my style of skiing. would prefer smaller
at a slower speed. all this having been said, boat is a bargain considering price of other models both new and used.
one last comment. the ski platform mounts are not the removable type so i changed them out.
I have a 99 MC Sportstar closed bow. It was Jim’s up until last spring, when it moved north to VT. Jim did a great job giving details on the model; let us know if you have other questions. The 99+ boats have 310hp EFI TBI 350(aka Preditor) that was used by MC as a base motor until 04. Here is a pic (http://jamiecarroll.com/mc/mc_moomba.jpg) of my boat next to the 98 Moomba it replaced! Best of luck on the boat hunt. Jamie

Magene, the sportstar 19 is a great slalom boat. I have skied behind the 98 Sportstar and the slalom wakes are small, and the spray is fantastic. It has the traditional rear-facing observer seat. Jim pretty much covered the details, but I'd highly recommend the boat. Also, and I'm not positive, but I seem to remember the 98 I skied behind having the 310 hp predator. Wasn't that optional in 98?

That is good! Mag brings it on himself! We however have been with the same person for the better part of our lives. We don't need to hear every time Mag has a new woman. OK Mag we get it! We are out of the game because the rules have changed and we are not able to compete at the level that Viagra allows you to compete!!!!!!! Just a thought! Sorry, sometimes I think I am on the "Drinkin Thread" still. All Mag's exes ... east Texas. Hey, they should write a song like that. Anybody realize those words rhymed?

Here are the final details. It's a Sportstar 19 w/the 310 HP Predator engine and a 4 blade OJ prop (at least it says Johnson on it). It has a factory zero flex tower with board racks and bimini. About 220 hours and it is in very good (not quite excellent) shape. Comes with a dual axle MC trailer also in good shape. Also has some other little goodies including a barefoot boom and a XM radio. We are negotiating around $21,500. The other boat I'm considering is a 99 Nautique Sport also in very good condition that would probably be about $28K by the time I add a tower, racks, bimini and a new cover.
Any comments would be appreciated.

I don’t know a lot about the sport star but it sounds like you got a good profile on it. Now I think the Nautique Sport is a boat they use as a wakeboard boat and may have a bigger wake.
AND
Just like Hoosier Bob wishes he could be girl hunting like Mag
I envy you for getting to “Boat Hunt”
Have fun:banana:
